I was rather fortunate to bump into Panasonic Japan's Suguru Takamatsu as I was leaving a meeting with Panasonic UK managers and he said: "Ian, have a look at this..." and out of a bag emerged a Lumix L1 and the newly announced 25mm f/1.4 Leica Summilux for Four Thirds, which equates to a 50mm f/1.4 in 35mm film parlance. The lens is beautifully made and sports an aperture ring, as you would expect, but it's not on the back of the lens, but the front (ironically - Olympus OM-style!). As you can see from some of the pictures below it's smaller and lighter than the Vario Elmarit 14-50mm f/2.8-3.5, but it still feels substantial and solid in construction. I couldn't get a hint of a price out of Suguru, but the lens will be available from the spring next year.
