    Hello Brian,

These birds always look so attractive set against the blue sky with their white feathers and this one certainly looks as though it was posing for you. You have also managed to get a catchlight in its eye.

I have to say, that unfortunately I think you have either moved, or got the exposure wrong as it is out of focus and there is no detail in the chest feathers. The whole photo is soft including the post.

I know it is difficult when you have a new camera trying to get everything right and although I can recognise what is wrong, I do not have sufficient technical ability to help you to get it right.

I am sure some of the other members will offer suggestions.

    Good luck.

Hi Brian - I've never seen this before - what a great photo opportunity

I do agree with Audrey that the shot is mysteriously soft; I wonder if you used full aperture and it's a tight crop as it doesn't feel like camera shake softness. It looked like a bright day too. If that or other gulls make a habit of sitting in the same place like that, it's well worth going back and having another go.

        Ian,

I think it is camera shake, I was using a monopod and when tying to focus it looked like everything was jumping all over the place. To be honest, I was suprised when the images came out as clear as they did.
