  • Congratulations to DTD!

In this month's Olympus User Magazine, David has won a summer photo competition with 'the beach' as the theme.

It's a mono study of a be-suited man with a big moustache looking out to sea on what looks like a rather bleak day at the beach. It was taken using an Olympus OM-1n film camera and a 24mm lens.

Maybe David can tell us a little more about the picture?

    Well done, David!

Yay!! Well done DTD. I'd like to hear more about it too.

Any chance of seeing the picture other than trying to get hold of a copy of the magazine?

Oh Thank you very much. Nearly missed this thread what with working shifts and trying to find my way around the forum (ahem)

The picture was taken in the early 1990s in Southport. It's part of an ongoing series I'm doing about the seaside. Most of the other pictures in the series are taken on a Ricoh GR1s. As Ian said this was taken with on an OM1n with a 24mm lens.

The photo is here on my web site:

Superb! Excellent website too with some cracking good shots! I love "eye cctv" from the reportage section and "butterfly" (graphics) is also a beauty.

I see you've also visited the De la Warr since it reopened and took shots from about the same spot as me - bottom of the staircase. I should've taken a wider lens inside but I couldn't manage the hobble back to the far end of the carpark so my Salon entry was shot at 28mm.

I'd wanted to get there at first light for the bandstand but we got stuck in traffic and it was too bright by the time we arrived so we'll have to try again another day. My bandstand shots all have lens flare.

          Thanks – You'll have me blushing :-)
I visited the De La Warr earlier this year, I've wanted to for years. I chuckled when I saw your salon entry and thought "well that's one picture I won't be entering!"
I know everyone takes the same picture of the light fitting in the stair well, but it is one of the icons of modernism. Took mine on an Olympus E-1 with the 35mm equivalent of a 28mm lens, but I was almost lay down!

I was lucky - a very nice man gave me a chair to help me out as I can't stand for long and feared I might fall backwards looking upwards.

Our eldest son once had a few photos in an exhibition at the DLW - circa 1992/93 and he also did a fashion shoot in there where the models were all placed on and around the staircase. I envied his shots, including a few from the exterior picking out stark shadows and textures. I loved them all so I'd like to aim for my own selection - though I can't ever do the 'fashion thing' as he did - I dunno any models and his was linked to a College event.

He eventually quit photography in favour of broadcasting technology. He doesn't take many photos these days but he's encouraging about my own efforts and also quite generous about buying me bits and pieces of kit from my wishlist.

I'm very envious of your son if he had some photos exhibited there. Can't think of a better venue for my seaside photos to be displayed ;-)

I wish he'd kept up with Photography. He insisted he wasn't "good enough to compete and earn a decent living" and he also seemed to prefer video and film. But I reckon he was a lot better than he realised - got himself one or two good commissions even when he was still at College. He did HNC photography after A level and during a gap year.

The DLWP exhibition was linked to the College - Art, Fashion and Photography.

I never cease to be amazed that he prefers sitting up 'in a box' shoving levers and buttons in a windowless TV studio but there y'go. The only camera he ever uses these days is a small Canon s50 we gave him 2-3 years ago... and he takes some fabulous shots with it if and when he does decide to use it.

He keeps asking me to throw out his negatives and portfolio, which are still stored here at home. I never would though. I still have a look through the files occasionally. He still insists he wasn't "good enough" but I still insist that's no reason to give up enjoying taking photos as a hobby. He claimed he grew to "hate photography" for many years but he's still glad he did the course up to HNC but can't see himself "getting into it" ever again.

I like your seaside photos - I also enjoy watching and shooting candids of people on the beach, prom etc. Bexhill can also be good for 'promenade' candids - I had a go at that last week too but none of them are quite what I'd have liked. I chickened out of a potential belter 'cos the guy spotted me and I feared I might upset him if I clicked the shutter. I got a cracking shot of his behind but I'd rather have have a face on view.
