  • First post of pictures with a canon 5d

    Dear All,

This is my first post of pictures taken with a Canon 5D. I used a Sigma 105mm Macro lens. The lighting was (for the most part) natural and I used reflectors to lift the shadows.

I welcome any comments and critique. Here are 4. and more can be found here http://dpnow.com/galleries/showgallery.php/cat/732

    Best Regards

    Josh

I like the first and the last one. the second one looks blown and the third looks out of focus. The first one looks so sharp.

Hi Josh, your trademark flower eh
BTW don't think I ever congratulated you on the new camera. By now I expect you have realised you are gonna love it, did you manage to sell all the other gear?

These flowers look pretty good to me, not so keen on the 3rd one but 3 out of 4 isn't bad I also think that as specimen shots go you have been fairly creative, and avoided looking into the cup, instead choosing to remove petals to reveal inside. Just one technical thing, I've dragged a couple into PS and discovered they will stand a lot more sharpening. Using Smart Sharpen I gave them 155 at 0.4 using the Lens blur option, but you may prefer to adjust that. The point is you can now see the texture and grain of the flower petals and I feel there are a negligible amount of artefacts.

Whoahhhh! I should have said those setting were for the web image you posted here, for an A3 print they would be quite different, you will have to experiment on that one.

            Too late

Have just been back through the Tiff files and realised that 155 was going to be too much. However did use unsharp mask more than I had done and you were spot on. The texture of the petals comes out a treat.

Oh well. I would also stress that I was using Smart Sharpen, an infinately better method than USM in my opinion

Love the tulips, one of my fav flowers. I like 1 & 2 best and also like no.4 but not as much. I think the colours stand out more and I love those colours. My personal taste and opinion. Will look at your other pics too.

Love these shots, the first is my fav, the red and yellow on black has maximum impact and makes the other shots look pale, though they still are very good.
                  cheers
