Photo critique Here is where you can display your images and seek the comment, advice and, maybe, constructive critique of your work. Only post your images here if you are happy for frank feedback. If in doubt, use the beginners board instead. Only post your comments here if you feel you can make a constructive and polite contribution in response to what is, for some, a leap of faith in exposing their work to your critical comment.

Karamea Coast

We were on our way to Karamea. It was early morning. Coming over a rise the photographed view unfolded. We stopped the car and I recorded it. The appeal
was in the mist quality of the view together with the cloud formation.

I love this picture Dianne, when I first saw it in your gallery, it appealed immediately. It has an almost primeval quality and I somehow expect to see some dinosaur come out of the trees.

The atmospheric gradation is wonderful too and the seamist adds to the quality.

I'm a little uneasy about the contrast in the foreground, though I suspect you may have tried to address this area somehow yourself. Maybe its the direction of the sun, I'm not sure, but I just feel the foreground needs a lift. I'm also guessing the aspect ratio is governed by your camera format, personally I prefer a 3:2 ratio and I might be looking to crop a little off the bottom as a result Call it personal taste nitpicking

Re: Karamea Coast

When I first looked at this early this morning I just left it as I was unable to come up with the words as to what I felt about it. So I have just come back again and still had the same problem. Then I cheated and had a look at other comments (I normally never do this) and I read the descriptive words that I was unable to come up with. Stephens 'primeval' and his imagining the appearance of a dinosaur has nailed it exactly. I see this especially in the larger trees and their shapes, not to mention the morning mist. There is a lovely sight of the sea, gently reaching the shore. I too would prefer more width to this.

Re: Karamea Coast

Dianne,

The scenic view on this photo is really nice. The mist is really nice too.
Though the mist visible in shots like this looks better when on the distant background. In the foreground mist creates a not so desirable effect in my opinion.
So I need to agree with Stephen's previous comments and in order for me to be able to explain better what I think and given that my English is not perfect, I prefer to post an example of what is in my mind than describing it.
So I did a rework on your shot trying to take most of the mist off from the foreground and I imagine it somehow like this, give or take a little of everything according to personal taste:

That's pretty much what I had in mind for the foreground, George.

Lovely image Dianne. I quite like the original because of the subtleness.

Love the image, the mist gives it an almost eerie quality
