Golden-Sepia Mix Monotone Effect

This photo, when I view it from far it looks to me like wall painting/drawing.
Though it is also normal to other people not to look like this.

Apart from my own certain way of thinking of monotone color selection according to the colored photo, I'm interesting to know if this type of monotone treatment works for you and if not to hear any other monotone suggestions.

I will not post the color version as this is not supposed to be which version looks better, but if this monotone color selection works OK for most of you.

Regards

George

Re: Golden-Sepia Mix Monotone Effect

The only thing spoiling this image for me is those arials up on top of the building. Everything else is shouting 'old' and even the young ladies hair style looks old fashioned. I think the tone suits the image admirably.
Tried to imagine it in b/w but it doesn't seem to work.

Thanks Pops,

The aerials is something to consider for omitting prior to the final version.
The only reason I left them there for now is that the photo was taken a few months ago and I didn't plan to use it as old in the first place.
Though taken the aerials off gives me the opportunity to use it either way I guess

George, I agree with the foregoing comments. I think darkening the sky might also increase the impact. Excepting the antennae, the shot is almost ageless.

Re: Golden-Sepia Mix Monotone Effect

I can see why you say it looks like a painting/drawing - for me I think it is the heavy contrast between building and sky which does it. Even though the lady is looking back into the photograph, the seat points the wrong way for me and jars a little. The colouring you have chosen suits the movement in the water and suggests a warm feeling which is a little at odds with the dark buildings. What am I saying? I'm not sure - I think perhaps I would like a lighter more faded tone.

Re: Golden-Sepia Mix Monotone Effect

I rather like the image, for much the same reasons as have been suggested, though this particular shade of toning is not my favourite. However that's a personal preference. The one weak link for me is the sky. My feeling is that its over processed, grain/noise has crept into the tones and there is a light halo round the roof of the building. If I was giving you a score in a competition I think I would have to mark you down for this

Hi Blithe,

Thanks for commenting.
Though I didn't understand what you meant by writing: "The seats points the wrong way for me". Can you clarify it better?

Stephen,

I have a specific way (my own way if you want to call it like this) that I choose the toning for the photos, but anyway that relies into personal preference for different people.
The halo is due to plugin effect applied. The reason for applying this specific halo effect is that under intense and strong sunshine looking at an object might create this slight halo effect in relation of the angle that the sun hits an object.
Since this photo was taken under strong sunshine, that effect could be very much possible.

For the grain in the sky I can agree. Maybe is a little more than it should be.

Re: Golden-Sepia Mix Monotone Effect

Sorry for not making myself clear. What I meant was that, for me, the seat/bench is facing towards the left - out of the photograph - and looks as though the lady might jump up at any minute to exit. I know we can't always have things where we want them.

Do you mean that the bench should be in the middle of the frame?
I framed the bench to be slighlty on the left. I had all the available time to frame it wherever I want it. I did it in purpose like this.
To me it doesn't look that the lady will jump out of the photo as she facing on the right and not on the left.
Slightly off center on either side is always better especially when other distant background objects are part of the main theme.

Anyway my opinion.

George

Re: Golden-Sepia Mix Monotone Effect

Please do not take offence by what I posted, as it was not intended. It is just the direction in which it is facing that does not sit well with me. I agree with you regarding placing it off centre. I'm digging a bigger hole now so I shall shut up.

Hey Blithe,

I'm not offended at all
We are exchanging opinions. I put up the photo in the "Photo Critique" section so I will read and consider every comment.
And you don't need to "shut up" as you said. I do want to hear comments from all people and I have a good reason for that, so please comment in the future in my photos in whatever you think you should. I really mean that.

As far as the lady is concerned, she is sitting left on the bench, because in front of her she has some kind of paperwork, reading and doing some calculations. She sat down that way in the left side of the bench to have space in front of her to put her papers, pencils and calculator.

See you later

George

Re: Golden-Sepia Mix Monotone Effect

Hi George,
I think the image is fine apart from the arials, however although I am viewing the image on a different monitor and not my own, the toning does appear to have a pink tinge to it, and does not represent, a true sepia/gold tone, I feel that the toning does let a very fine image down, My own personal taste is for duo toning, and trying to represent the tones of the old chemical processes, however this is down to my own personal taste.

Hi Tinka,

Thanks for commenting.
Check though one more time if you have time, how it appears on your monitor, because in my monitor I don't see any pink tinge.
