Does anyone like these kinds of effects?

Hi everyone,

I'm a new user, but wanted people's opinions on this pic. I snapped it really quickly out of a window in my Uni accommodation, initially it was awful but with this basic filter I thought it looked reasonable.

This is only a small preview file, the real one is around 10 megs so sorry about the quality.

Mark,
I believe that effect should be only be used on a simple picture That effect used on the picture you show my eyes had to work too hard. this is also all a matter of opinion! anyone else agree?

Makes an interesting sort of picture, but I too found myself peering hard at the screen to try to make out what the scene was all about. At first I thought it was a barge on a river, I'm assuming now it is a 'skip'? It's always worth a try when the original photograph doesn't appeal, different effects can work miracles, I perhaps like more subtle changes.

Sorry but this does not work for me. It took me a bit of time to work out what I was looking at. I guess it would work on a not so busy picture. have you tried any other pictures with this effect if so what do they look like.

It doesn't work for me at all, but I won't dwell on the negatives. Suffice to say you've taken what you yourself described as an "awful" picture and added a dubious-looking Photoshop filter to create something which doesn't gel as an image. Nothing wrong with that (most of us have done it

), but maybe you could consider the following:

If you want to simply record a scene or event for posterity (or evidence...), then taking a "quick snap" is perfectly okay and usually all that is necessary. However if you wish to make a picture for others to share and appreciate, then you need to apply yourself a little more and consider how sucessful images work.

Think about the balance and flow of the image (remembering that what you can see with your eyes is one heck of a lot more than people viewing a rectangular frame will see) as well as how the scene or subject is lit (or not) and whether you're focusing on the right elements to draw attention to the right areas of detail etc. This way, you'll at least have the basis for strong images with which you can experiment; not simply to save them from being "awful", but to enhance what was already fundamentally good and develop ideas further.

My advice to you is be hard on yourself. Bin the rubbish and analyse why certain shots fail. Keep the good stuff and post-process the images in a variety of ways to see what works and when. Believe me, you'll soon find your groove

Mark, I can only confirm what the others have said. I was struggling to see what the picture was. Bearface' advice is worth bearing in mind.

That is excellent advice Bearface. I shall try to put it into practice more often. I take a lot of pics and am now beginning to 'bin' a lot more. The ones I really try with, are usually the best.

Mark, It does not appeal to me. I'm not sure what you reaction you were striving to obtain in your photo viewer's mind or emotion. I was just confused.

It is quite reminiscent of the Dallas skyline, and that doesn't appeal to me either.

(Maybe because I'm an Oklahoma Sooner.)

Then again, I am/was trained as a mathmatician, so my photos are often lacking originality or style.

Keep trying. Style and taste are highly individualized.

In my short time with DPNow forums, I have learned how helpful and supportive the members can be.

There are many different filters and effects that can be applied.
Though some of them apply to photos, some other to images, some other to video stills, some other to fractals, e.t.c.
Photos accept specific type of effects in order to remain photos and not change their identity into another form of image.

Let me put it this way, since life has done a great thing and has applied same basic rules to all aspects in life: Your car can accept different brand tires, a few different variations of tire sizes, but it cannot accept ultra wide formula tires, nor bike or bicycle tires. Same is with the rest of the car, like suspension and engine.
Same is with photos too. Same is with all things in life since they all have certain tolerations and limitations.

I was trying hard to make up what is in that photo. I'm still not sure, but it looks to me it is some machinery used for construction in a work land. Even if I'm correct, I still tried hard to make up what it is.
The purpose of the photo is to show you fast and clearly what the theme is and then let your imagination to fly around by triggering your feelings.

So I think if you want to use photo effects, stick initially to the most basic of them.

To be honest, I would use for example this specific type of effect, if I was trying to make out and approximate the basic dimensions and characteristics of a face/figure through a video still.

It's certainly a construction site. Looking hard reveals at least one tipper lorry with body raised and a large JCB type vehicle.
Takes to much looking and I feel this more art than photography. Shame really because building sites can offer lots of different and interesting subjects
