  • Macro in the dark

    I found a few of these girls in the garden the last couple of nights. Quite a difficult macro subject though they don't move much.



    This is with a quick burst of light from a screened torch during the 8 second exposure.



    You can see that the name glow worm is a misnomer, they are female adult beetles Lampyris noctiluca.

    Cool! You have these in your garden or are you on holiday somewhere? I have only seen these in Japan and France.

      Yes, in the garden.

      They are not uncommon on the nature reserve opposite to our house, the wardens sometimes organise glow worm nature walks around this time of year.

          You've got a very nice picture there too. Lots of details and a great exposure, especially considering the circumstances.

                It makes me wounder how much luminosity those little beetles give out?
