Another Nokia 808 PureView shot and comparison

Both the following shots are of the same side street in Budapest taken last week. One of these is taken with a Nokia 808 PureView 41MP smartphone and the other using nearly £2K's worth of interchangeable lens systems camera. So which is which (no looking at the image metadata! ):





It's not easy to tell, is it?

That is really quite impressive. Going by what you said about the FoV of the 808 lens and that you were using the Panasonic 12-35 most of the time, I will guess at the wider FoV in the second shot being from the OM-D with the lens at the wide end. Although the more saturated colours in the first image, are slightly more appealing to the eye, I think the second image may be more true to reality.

A very interesting comparison and one that will raise some questions...

This is excellent performance from the camera phone and will only accelerate the reduction in sales of compacts - see here

I use a Nokia N8 (Nokia's previously top camera) and don't have a compact - the camera in the phone is entirely adequate for most things that I would use a compact camera for'

The N8 has an exceptional 'conventional' smartphone camera. Unfortunately, the E7, which is the version of the N8 with a keyboard (which Julia has) doesn't have the same camera.

My daughter, Elizabeth, has the newer Nokia Lumia 800 Windows phone, which resembles the N8 but again, the camera in that, although not bad, is not a patch on the N8's.

But the 808 PureView is a league ahead of the N8 again!

Graham, you're right. The Nokia 808 PureView has a 28mm equivalent wide angle lens and the other shot was taken using a focal length equivalent to 24mm. There was some cropping on both to take into account of straightening the vertical centre line.

Just goes to prove what I have always said, any well taken image looks good on the web and only the content and thought behind them differentiates them and not the camera used.

Kind of seems silly when someone say of a 800 pixel image that the image is good because the latest wizbang camera has made it.

I remember when trying out the Olympus Pen Pal bluetooth adapter that the images that ended upon Facebook looked soft. Basically, in the various stages that the camera image passed through (resized by the Pen Pal, resized again in the phone and probably resized again by Facebook, that the image degraded noticeably.

The Nokia 808 PureView looks impressive even at 100% pixel peeping.

Makes you wonder where it will all end up, but then it will never end developments will march on to new heights.

It would be interesting to see a 100% comparison, against a typical £500 compact camera.

While the typical phone camera snaps that we see on social network sites is of no interest, "phonography" is gaining ground and images produced at this quality level, will increase the use of them in place of the compact camera.
