  • Forum posts restored - but...

As you may already know, our server has had severe database problems this week, resulting in some data corruption. This has been made worse by the discovery that our routine backups have not worked properly for several weeks.

Our forum backup only reaches 8th June this year, so messages since then have probably been lost for good. The restore does seem to have worked, but we have lost the messages from the last two days. There are likely to be further consequences which I will explain in due course.

Great stuff - we're getting there!

I've just this minute sent you a PM with an important reminder.

Re: Forum posts restored - but...

The good news is that we discovered the nature of the problem that has caused the disruption to our SQL database. It was as simple as a memory allocation limit for processes. There was loads of memory available but the process limit was exceeded.

The bad news is that the forum restore does mean, sadly, that not only have we lost all messages (and private mails and blogs) posted since 8th June (this year) but the recently posed messages over the last couple of days have also been lost.

The gallery, which looked like it had lost its images this morning, now looks to be back to normal. (actually it has reverted to 8th June - am looking to see if we can recover the gap to today)

If I had allocated more gallery space for you in the last three months, I may need to repeat this for you - please get in touch if this is the case!

I'm sure that we will recover quickly from this, but in the mean time I can only apologise profusely for this disruption and inconvenience. Thank you again for your patience and understanding!

Anyone who has joined the forum since 8th June will now find they are no longer a member - I will try to identify everyone and create new accounts for them.

Just to reconfirm, the gallery has reverted to 8th June, but I think there is a good chance we can recover this - I'm debating this with David at the moment.

Most of my posts and photos are back although some of the photos have no thumbnails for some reason.

                Edit;

Solved the thumbnail problem, I re-uploaded the affected shots and new thumbnails were generated.

I will write something very obviuos but nevertheless crucial to PC work and just to alert people.
This actual awesome experience is very important because it adresses once more the tremendous need and value of keeping backups from PCs work, and to do it permanently. All inversion in this matter is rewarded. H

And indeed we run automatic daily backups on our servers, but somebody didn't notice that the backups on the DPNow server had been failing. So maybe the moral of the story is make regular backups and ensure that the backups are verified.

I backup to multiple sources, 2 external hard drives (one stored off site), 2 thumb drives and DVDs.

Hi frfiends, I did not meant to criticize what happened. I just wanted to re-enphasize the value of permanent backups. Regards,H

No criticism was felt, Horacio - I, too, was trying to reinforce your point
