Sigma 50mm f1.4

Purchased a Sigma 50mm f1.4, for night time photos, without tripod.

For my imminent holiday. Cant take a tripod !

Been playing with it in various lighting conditions, hand held. So far I am pleased with it.

Does anyone have, and use this lens? What are your opinions on the image quality of this lens ?

Also! Any tips or advice, would be appreciated.

Here a a couple of practice photos, with the lens wide open, and 1600 ISO.

I have read that this lens works well right from f/1.4, although it's not so good when focusing very close combined with a wide aperture.

There is not much to say really - keep an eye on depth of field when using it wide open and also check that the bokeh (defocussed areas) is soft enough when it's present.

It should be a good portrait lens when used on your 7D (80mm equivalent).

Since purchasing the lens, I have read reports that some of these lenses, have problems with either back focusing or front focusing.

Fortunately. I have not found this.

Your Canon EOS-7D can compensate for this anyway

Nice examples that look very crisp, first one a bit dark for me.
Like Ian said about focussing, if you are taking people or portraits wide open, make sure you are actually focussing on what you want sharp in the frame, I would suggest putting your camera into spot focussing mode and focus locking.

The advice has been taken on board.

The first photo is dark, I agree. The purpose of that photo, was really for me, to see under what conditions of light, the lens would operate hand held.
