  • Photos from Tacloban City, Leyte, the Philippines.

In order for us to reach my mother's home town of Hilongos, Leyte, we chose to fly to the Leyte island capital, Tacloban City. This is where General MacArthur famously returned to the Philippines to start the liberation of the country from the Japanese at the end of World War II.

At the port in Tacloban City, Leyte Philippines. This is a small banca ferry, or a type of local out-rigger fishing boat, possibly destined for nearby Bohol island. (Correction, Bohol is too far for these Bancas, it's nearby Samar island that they are headed to).

    Shoe shine.

The local burger brand (they do a good fried chicken with rice and gravy too!).

The Jeepneys are still there of course.

    Street life.

    Local photographer - that's a Minolta SRT-303 around his neck, circa 1970.

    Two-legged man power.

One-legged Tacloban man meets Dunkin Donuts.

I'm ever so pleased there's a Jeepney featuring. I'd have been disappointed if there hadn't been at least one. I also like the fella with his two-legged turbo-truck.

This 'street' series is excellent - really captures the atmosphere, buzz and spirit of the place. I didn't know about the General MacArthur connection either so thanks for that snippet.

It's all been said, but that's an excellent series. Particularly like the street and ferry shots. (think that covers them all )

I thought I would dig up this thread from three years ago - it's more than likely that all these scenes are now devasted after last week's super-typhoon.

It must be heartbreaking to look back at these images and be left wondering what has happened to the place.

I am pleased that you now know that your relatives are not badly hit by this disaster.

Lets hope the Aid Agencies get going as fast as possible to help.

I remember your images very well.

It's a shocking situation, so very sad and upsetting to read about and see the footage. It's difficult to believe those solid, concrete building could've been so devastated so quickly and so completely.

My thoughts and prayers are with those who are bereaved and struggling to survive at this moment.

All these pictures were taken very close to the sea front and it was just these places that would have been consumed by the up to 20-foot storm surge - even half that would have been enough to make concrete buildings crumble so close to the sea.

The recent media images have left me in awe of the destruction. I am delighted to hear that all is well with your family. I suspect that restoration will take years.
