In order for us to reach my mother's home town of Hilongos, Leyte, we chose to fly to the Leyte island capital, Tacloban City. This is where General MacArthur famously returned to the Philippines to start the liberation of the country from the Japanese at the end of World War II.

At the port in Tacloban City, Leyte Philippines. This is a small banca ferry, or a type of local out-rigger fishing boat, possibly destined for nearby Bohol island. (Correction, Bohol is too far for these Bancas, it's nearby Samar island that they are headed to).

Shoe shine.

The local burger brand (they do a good fried chicken with rice and gravy too!).

The Jeepneys are still there of course.

Street life.

Local photographer - that's a Minolta SRT-303 around his neck, circa 1970.

Two-legged man power.

One-legged Tacloban man meets Dunkin Donuts.
