Spyder Calibration color shift problem

Hello all,

I'm having this problem for a couple of weeks now and can't seem to figure out whats wrong. I've read dozens of websites & forums but can't figure out what's wrong. Maybe someone can help me out here.

I have a wide gamut monitor (Eizo S2231W) which i have calibrated with a DataColor Spyder3Pro. Since then the colors in Color-aware programs such as Photoshop, Safari and FastFiewer look way off. For example, the sky turns from blue to purple. I tried to re-calibrate a couple of times, deleting all ICC-profiles, re-install the software. Nothing helps me to get rid of this color shift. Well, getting rid of the Spyders ICC-profile solves it, but this device is supposed to improve my colors, not ruin it.

Could my Spyder device be faulthy? Could it be it can't work properly with a Wide Gamut monitor?

Specs:

Windows XP
Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS
Eizo S2231W Wide Gamut monitor
Photoshop CS2
DataColor Spyder 3Pro

Kind regards,

John

Hi John, I'm afraid I can't help you directly, but I have contact details for Colour Confidence's product manager (nice, user-friendly sort of guy). If you want to PM me, I'll give you his details.

I think the manufacturer of the device could help you better with this problem.

Hi

It should work OK with a wide gamut monitor, I share ownership of a spyder2 with a friend who has a Eizo and it works fine.
I do agree that contacting some one like Colour Confidence may be helpful.

John, a couple of thoughts come to mind. Are you examining images that were adjusted prior to your screen calibration?

Secondly, sorry if this is a bit too obvious, but are your colour-aware applications, like Photoshop, defaulting to the correct colour space (sRGB, Adobe RGB, ProPhoto, etc.) as the colour space applied to the images?

Re: Spyder Calibration color shift problem

Ian,

No the problem is with every image i have in sRGB or convert to sRGB. Photoshops Proof Color function shows the sRGB image colours the same as it would appear on a not calibrated monitor. If i uncheck this the blue sky shifts to blue/purple. Also most (but not all) sRGB images from the net (flickr.com) show purple cast in Safari (CM) but not in Explorer.
It seems Wide Gamut monitors have a problem showing sRGB images in Color Managed programs when it's calibrated (WideGamut/AdobeRGB). sRGB images in color aware applications show a purple cast in the sky. In color unware applications they are over saturated but with the right colors.

Hi

As you have a wide gamut monitor would you be better using Adobe RGB with its wider colour range instead of sRGB. It seems a waste to me of the monitors capability.

Re: Spyder Calibration color shift problem

Patrick,

The monitor is hardware calibrated which means it is using the wider colour range. Unfortunately most images on the web are sRGB. It seems my monitor has a problem with these images: Oversaturated in Explorer (no CM) and a purple sky in Safari (CM).

I edit my RAW's in AdobeRGB space, after converting the images for the internet to sRGB the color of the sky shifts to purple.
Offcourse the 1000's of pictures I shot in sRGB JPG have this problem the moment I open them in Photoshop or view them in Safari or other color managed programs.

I wonder if your installed sRGB profile has been corrupted? Can you copy the file from another computer and replace it?

Re: Spyder Calibration color shift problem

This shoudn't matter because colours are the same in all programs when I set Windows Color Management to the default sRGB profile. The problem occurs when i do calibrate my monitor and use the calibrated profile or when I use the Eizo-profile delivered on the CD with my monitor.
