Storm brewing on Philippine coral island

One from the archives - taken almost 12 years ago:

This is Canigao island, locally know as the light house island, just off the coast of Leyte near Matalom, the Philippines.

The picture was taken using a 2.5 megapixel Olympus C-2500L digital camera.

Wow! What atmosphere. We expect to see the wonderful tropical sunny conditions for such a scene, the contrasting weather is equally spactacular.

That resolution is well in excess of what is needed for web postings, which kinda makes all these new HiRes cameras a wee bit superfluous.

Re: Storm brewing on Philippine coral island

Thanks guys. I have magnified the mood in post processing, but the weather was closing in so it was definitely time to leave

I loved the old C-2500L. My one regret is that I still had not shrugged off my 'film economy' attitude and probably should have taken more pictures than I did. Although of course memory cards were very small and very expensive at the time.

Re: Storm brewing on Philippine coral island

On a technical level digital photography has come a long, long way in 12 years, yet from a photographic and artistic point of veiw very little has changed. In fact, electronic display and sharing of pictures, be it on forums like this, facebook, ipad, TV screens etc. rather than traditional prints is far more predominant today than it was back then, so paradoxically "only" 2.5mp is actually now less of an issue in practice. Quite ironic given the state of today's pixel race and it really does make you question it's relevance.

Regarding the picture itself, it's a timeless image which splendidly captures the mood. That's what great photography is all about and in many ways the camera used is irrelevant.

Same island although from a different viewpoint and over ten years on from the original shot. This was taken in September 2010. The skies never fail to impress though

Thumbs up Re: Storm brewing on Philippine coral island

Such a clearly defined inversion layer... I'm always impressed by the way nature produces these effects and potential for such good images.
