Exclamation We have our review Nikon V1 and J1 compact system cameras!

A nice courier man delivered a box containing the two new Nikon 1 compact system cameras, the V1 (with electronic viewfinder and conventional shutter) and the J1 that marvelously has neither a viewfinder nor a conventional shutter.

The batteries are charging up as I type. And that's not all. On Sunday I am off to Shanghai to visit the Nikon factory that assembles the new Nikon 1s.

I can't guarantee that all questions can be answered by the people at the factory, but if you have a question you'd like me to ask on your behalf, I will do my best - either post it here in this thread or email feedback@dpnow.com.

One thing I have noticed since the cameras have arrived (and I have the 10-30 kit zoom, plus the kit 30-110mm tele, and the 10mm pancake) is that the lenses don't cater at all for manual focusing. I will investigate further to see if there is any way to manually control focus...

I'd be interested in knowing if they can have dedicated parts of the sensor for AF will they consider something similar for real time control of exposure and even flash during exposure in the way OTF used to work

Manual focus is achieved by rotating the paddle control on the back of the camera after selecting manual focus mode.

Re: We have our review Nikon V1 and J1 compact system cameras!

While it's "Old hat", having a focus scale is sometimes very useful. My Olympus C8080 has an electronic focus scale that displays at the side of the enlarged focus assist area of the EVF/Display.

I've often stated that manufacturers could do well to consider offering a fully customisable user interface, where all the setup and custom features can be selected, adjusted, "played with" on a computer saved onto the memory card as a "My Mode".

Having the ability to change the position and way the LCD/EVF displays the information we want to see, would be a really nice feature, in the same way we select and position of the "Tools" etc., in Photoshop, to suit the way we want to work.

If they do pick up on the idea, a D3x would be nice

I wonder if because the AF is so high tech with claims that it beats everything Nikon has, they actually downplayed the manual focus features/abilities ...
It will be interesting to read your thoughts. Some cameras are designed to meet the photographer's style of operating and some seem to be challenges to let technology handle more of the photographer's usual routine. The Nikon 1s may be the challenging kind. What do we get in the bargain?

Re: We have our review Nikon V1 and J1 compact system cameras!

Hi Bob, it's been a busy week as was invited with most of the rest of the UK photo press to visit the Chinese factory near Shanghai where the Nikon 1 cameras and lenses (including lens grinding) are made. Got back last night!

We had lots of time to use the cameras - you can see an update on my blog too.

The manual focus works reasonably well. There is a dedicated focus function selector on the control paddle (in the 'south') position. This brings up the a choice of Area AF, Continuous AF, Single action AF and Manual AF. Select manual, press OK, then you need to press OK again to toggle manual control of focus on and off. Manual focus defualts to a moderately magnified view but you can quickly zoom that view in and out using the magnifier lever above the mode dial. It's quite fiddly, but I could get used to it.

Aha! Its Coolpix heritage shows through
My first digital camera was the Coolpix 5000. About the same size body, pixels and kit lens with half of the sensor area. I do see some other familiarities, too.
