Exclamation Changes to image posting in forum posts

Hi everyone. Because we have developed a more sophisticated alternative to the forum's built in image attachment and photo album facilities these have been disabled. The attachment system only shows thumbnails of uploaded images and is very limited and the photo album facility confuses people who really should be using the photo gallery.

To post a photo in a forum message all you need to do is use the yellow square icon in the tool bar of the message editor box. Click on it and it will pop up a box prompting you for the URL (link address) of your image. If you aren't storing your images in your one online web space, you can of course upload (around 800 pixels along the longer side please) them to your personal gallery space that comes free with your forum membership.

From there you can simply copy and paste image display BBCode from the gallery pages to display your photos in forum posts. If you have any problems, please don't hesitate to let us know and we will help you as soon as we can!

Thanks,

Ian

Hi Ian
I want to post some images as a reply, your new system would appear to assume the images to be posted are in the Photo Gallery, I simply want to post an image to a post reply and can see no way of doing it.
It would not be appropriate to post the images in question in my gallery as they are for demo purposes only, and I have no wish for them to be in my Gallery.

Patrick

Opening up the 'Post Reply' window still allows you to post an image in the way Ian described assuming your image is already uploaded to your web site.

like so:

Re: Changes to image posting in forum posts

Hi Patrick - you make a fair point as not everyone will have their own webspace. There is a gallery category called General that is not well known about and this can be used for miscellaneous images - see:

http://dpnow.com/galleries/showgallery.php/cat/2

This can be used for non-specific images to be pasted into forum threads

Re: Changes to image posting in forum posts

I found the button myself, but the images I want to post are to demonstrate a piont and are not on my web site or never likely to be, more in my gallery.

Thank you Ian but I have no wish to place these images to a gallery, they are not represtetave of what I do. I simply wish to post some comparison images to demonstrate a piont.
The old system would allow this.

Re: Changes to image posting in forum posts

The gallery can operate both as webspace for photos to be shown in any way you wish on the forum or specifically as a photo gallery. It's much better than the forum attachments facility even for the way you used it. The problem with attachments is that you have to click on something to see the image, whereas using the image icon or gallery photos to show images means they are show inline with your text. People were using the attachments facility to show photos when they should have posted them in the gallery or from external webspace using the image icon in the forum post editor. It was confusing and we have addressed this. I'm very sorry if the change has inconvenienced you but I cannot resurrect the attachment facility here.

Re: Changes to image posting in forum posts

Hi again Patrick, unfortunately you have demonstrated why attachments are not appropriate for our sites on FTU, where the attachment function remains for now. You have posted some excellent photos in some threads on using the attachment process. These should have been posted in your gallery or on other webspace like Flickr or SmugMug, etc. and then included in your forum post using gallery BBCode or using the image button in the forum post editor.

But by using attachments we see small thumbnails in your forum post and so we have to click on each one independently to see the full size picture and there is no option for examining the exif data.

By posting your pictures to the gallery they would be accessible to more people as well as visible in any forum post you wanted and any exif data present would also be accessible.

Uploading an attachment is a bit easier than using the gallery or third party webspace, but apart from that it's not an ideal facility and the alternatives are much more elegant.

Ian

Ian
Then how do I show a one off image or images I don't want seen in my gallery, the equivalent to an attachment?
I would still like to make my demonstration but the images are of no meaning or interest outside the post.
I don't much care how I get them to the post, as long as they are not seen out of context.

Patrick

Re: Changes to image posting in forum posts

Patrick I hope I'm not interfering but I just loaded this image from my Photobucket Private account. Being a private account no one can see it. I have not had to upload it to this site and it dose not appear in my gallery. I just copied and pasted the link to here using the Icon in the reply box. Hope that helps.

Hi I thank you, but really there should be a way on the site, I have been a member for many years, and in all that time it was a simple matter to post images with or without them being in the gallery. In fact the sister website Four Thirds User still has this facility.
I am sure Ian will come up with a viable alternative he is probably having a day or two for bank holiday at the moment.

Thank you again

Patrick
