Facebook is tracking you.

I thought that I had opted out of all the intrusive Facebook stuff but it seems as though even non users are tracked whenever they visit a page that had a Facebook 'Like' button.

I have installed Privacy Badger and it is quite startling how many trackers and cookies are downloaded in every web page

Re: Facebook is tracking you.

Yes, I saw that and it is very alarming - the age of Big Brother really is here, both in terms of technology and intent.

Re: Facebook is tracking you.

I'm a retired IT Manager and quite IT security conscious. As a result I don't do Facebook, Twitter etc., life is quite nice without them actually

Likewise. Never used or needed them.

Re: Facebook is tracking you.

I agree. I only have a Facebook account because it was the preferred discussion medium for an on-line course I did. It's the only use I have ever made of it.

Never even looked at Twitter

I use WhatsApp for family photosharing and was sad to see it taken over by Facebook. there's not much choice when grandchildren believe the terms camera and phone are synonymous.

Re: Facebook is tracking you.

Also speaking as a thankfully-retired IT security manager, the sad thing is that any use of the internet results in lack of privacy, not just Faceache and Twatter. Microsoft, Apple, Yahoo, Google, and just about every on-line retailer collect data on your likes and preferences. You have two options. Cut yourself off from all communications, or else just be careful what you do. It's a fact of modern life, unfortunately.

Re: Facebook is tracking you.

An example "big brother" cautionary tale....

A few months ago we went to McDonalds near the Colchester United football ground. Whilst we were there I took a mobile phone photo of my granddaughter (3) enjoying her lunch. Somehow, and I obviously must have allowed it but I don't recall doing so, the image was uploaded to the 'net and now appears when people google that particular restaurant! I know because I recently had an email from google congratulating me because the photo has now been viewed over 1,000 times!!

Obviously the phone's GPS was on. I normally turn this off but on the day in question I'd used a GPS logging app on my phone to enable me to add GPS coordinates to my images later in Adobe Lightroom. I'd obviously forgotten to turn it off so they knew where we were.

They also knew who I was courtesy of my google account data which they obviously retrieved at the same time.

I'll be more careful in future.

Re: Facebook is tracking you.

Of course we can look at it from a Big Brother perspective, and believe that all of this is making the world a worse place. But there has to be some nouance to the discussion, and I'd like to throw in some positive things as well.

For example, as a result of gps-tracking, there's a newly implemented function that let people inform their facebook-friends that they are safe during a disaster of some sort. That is something that I was very happy about before christmas, when I had friends in Berlin.

True i agree!. My friend and i were in France (Lyon) when the Paris attack happened in Dec 2015. We had cancelled our plans to drive to Paris so it was super refreshing to share that i was safe on Facebook, i had coincidentally replaced my phone number at that time, so not everyone was in a place to contact me.

Re: Facebook is tracking you.

I don't like Facebook that much. In fact, I hardly use it once in while. Thankfully, I have lot of work to do instead of wasting my time on Facebook.

Re: Facebook is tracking you.

Social Media are indeed time consuming. The worst part is, that we are spending a lot of time watching facebook wall and it gives us... nothing. Watching funny videos on youtube seems more productive, at least it brings you some kind of entertainment - you cant say that when you're just wasting your time watching newborn babies on facebook...

When it comes to spying on us - its not only facebook. Everything is spying on us. Our email providers, phone carriers, operating systems in our smartphones... everything.

Look how rich facebook is... and yet - at first it seems like they're not selling anything. They do - our privacy
