Re: DSLR vs. iPhone

Snapseed is a brilliant app - I also have Lightroom mobile on my phone and, whilst it gives you the choice of shooting RAW (in DNG format), Snapseed often does a better job!

Re: DSLR vs. iPhone

Here's an example. The top shot was taken by an iPHone X. Then I used Snapseed to apply, HDR-Scape, then one of the BW filters, and finally Drama.

Re: DSLR vs. iPhone

I have been busy putting a Huawei P20 Pro smartphone through its paces. Almost since its launch 5 months or so ago it has sat at the top of the DxOMark smartphone camera technical quality ratings with a clear lead over its rivals, including the iPhone 10XS and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9.

Here's a few examples

Developed in Lightroom from a 40 megapixel DNG RAW file.

And they have just launched the Mate 20 Pro which has an ultra-wide camera.

These are stunning. I can see camera sales falling off if all phones become as good as this.

Extraordinary! I’m not familiar with the brand.

Hard to believe you can get pictures of this quality from a “telephone”!

Huawei is the second largest smartphone manufacturer by sales volume behind Samsung, having overtaken Apple earlier this year. They also own the Honor sub-brand.

You won't hear much about Huawei in the US because Huawei has been accused of being too close to the Chinese government by the US authorities. The big phone networks in the US won't sell Huawei phones.

Huawei is actually best known for their telco switch infrastructure equipment and I believe they are the biggest player in the world now. There seem to be fears that buying this gear is considered a 'national security risk'.

Nevertheless, they now make great Android handsets. They have teamed up with Leica to develop really excellent camera tech for their phones. I have been using P20 Pro and just this week received a their new flagship phonne, the Mate 20 Pro to try.

I have written an article on this week's Mate 20 series launch here:

Re: DSLR vs. iPhone

Triple camera? Impressive credentials.

I shot the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston yesterday with my Canon and my iPhone X. The 300 mm lens of the Canon was a clear advantage but the picture quality of the iPhone was top notch.

The X has a feature called Portrait that I've been playing around with. These two examples were shot the day before at a farm in Vermont. The first example is called Stage Light and the second is Studio Light. When I download the photos to my PC, Stage light transfers both images.

Re: DSLR vs. iPhone

I was in NYC last Saturday on a rainy day and took a shot of Times Square. The first image is unedited, the second is modified with FotoRus (Filter Art, HDR-L) and the third is Snapseed's Drama Tool. Just playing around.

Re: DSLR vs. iPhone

I prefer the un-filtered version myself, mainly because the edges of the buildings in the other two are 'glowing' which is a sign of over-processing

I'm sure it's possible to manually improve the original image without some of the problems the filtered versions are showing. If you like you can send me an original to forum-admin (at) dpnow.com and I'll have a go

Re: DSLR vs. iPhone

Saw these yesterday. But didn't get round to commenting.

I'm not keen on the second modification via FotoRus (Filter Art, HDR-L) I agree, that it does show a lot of flaring.

But the third is more to my liking with Snapseed's Drama Tool, even if very slightly over worked.

It will be interesting to see how Ian works it.

Re: DSLR vs. iPhone

How about this? - it's just boosted to make it 'pop' more. No artistic special effect intended

Re: DSLR vs. iPhone

I like it. By boosting did you bump up the saturation?

We get down to NYC once a year and invariably visit Times Square. Kodak used to display the photo they selected as Picture of the Day for 24 hours on a Jumbotron. I was pleasantly surprised to learn they picked one of mine several years ago.
