DPNow Salon competition No.55 - SURPRISE!

Thanks so much to Dave (mib2) for curating Salon 54, so here goes Salon 55, and the theme is:

SURPRISE!

Closing date for this Salon is midnight on Thursday 25th December. That date seems oddly familiar...

Here are the rules. Please take a moment to read them prior to shooting or uploading your submissions.

1) All photographs are to be uploaded to the photo gallery at http://dpnow.com/galleries/, they can be put in members own gallery if they wish. The resulting link generated for the photo will then be pasted into the next available space in the Salon thread. Please keep photos to max 800 pixel wide so people can see the whole image without scrolling.

2) One entry per user ID only please, which must be the personal work of the entrant.

3) Entries should be "in line" within the thread (not as links to an image held somewhere else).

4) Comments only on entries are welcome within the salon thread itself.

5) After the close the curator will indicate a winner and a couple of runners up.

6) The curator's decision is final.

7) Winners should be offered first refusal to choose the next theme and curate the next salon.

8.) If the winner is unable to curate the next salon the current curator may offer that "honour" to any willing volunteer, possibly the entrant in second or third place.

9) These rules are to be copied and pasted with a new theme by the new Curator at the top of the new Salon thread with a finish date and time.

10) As with all photos posted on DPNow, copyright remains with the photographer and DPNow will not use them without permission.

Re: DPNow Salon competition No.55 - SURPRISE!

Even at this time of the year Ian this is going to be a difficult challenge to meet.

The element of surprise is in the 'not knowing' and as soon as we 'know' it is no longer a surprise! How do we photograph this?

I think I need a new 'Thinking Cap'

I suppose this is a challenging theme, but I think most of us have taken pictures where there has either been an element of surprise (on the part of subject in relation to the photographer, or in capturing the reaction of surprise in a subject to something that is happening unexpectedly at the time). You could also capture the aftermath of a surprise

C'mon Audrey - you can do it!

That's clever

Can you describe what the scene is all about?

Re: DPNow Salon competition No.55 - SURPRISE!

Ian, its a photo I took in Florence - Italy, of the Door of Paradise crafted by Lorenzo Ghiberty! The Baptistry of the Duomo (Cathedral) The panels apparently took 27 years to create, between 1425 & 1452. The scenes depict stories from the bible. The shot I used for the salon was unfortunately only a partial section of the panel, as there were so many tourists crowding around the door, it was very difficult to get any really great photos of the entire scenes! This scene was of Moses receiving the 10 commandments, his people congregating below, which is the crowd scene I have used! The pair of doors are absolutely awesome & breathtaking in their artistry & craftmanship! I wull download a couple of other shots taken of the door in my gallery, so those interested can have a peek!
In my salon shot, I have selectively altered the outer crowd to a line or graphic pen scene, then created more focus on the middle crowd, using desaturation & aging filter, then placed a lighting effect on the immediate area of focus required, the surprized boy etc!

Re: DPNow Salon competition No.55 - SURPRISE!

I don't know who was more surprised, the dog seeing our new kitten or the kitten seeing the dog!
Was taken a while ago before I knew how to compose a picture properly so realise it has problems,
but think it's apt for this salon.

Re: DPNow Salon competition No.55 - SURPRISE!

I had be photographing some baubles in Next and when I downloaded the pictures, I was SURPRISED to see various images lurking in the background.

I may use this for a club competition coming up shortly - "Abstract."

Thanks Gina. I know it looks like a montage, but it is "As Is" just as I took it with my little Panny DMC FX01.
