Star trails

I don't recall seeing many star trail shots here on the DPNow forum and galleries over the years. I have only tried a few times without any results to get excited about, but earlier this week when I was with the family for a short break in France at a friend's house in the Vendée I decided to make a more determined effort and here is one of the results:

This is from 40x 40 second exposures (just under 27 minutes) stacked in Photoshop CS6 using the time-lapse function in an Olympus Pen E-M5 and an Olympus m.Zuiko 12mm (24mm equivalent) f/2.0 @ f/6.3, ISO 250.

I was pleased with the results because although there is no man made light pollution where my friend's place is, there was an almost full moon behind the camera.

Re: Star trails

And here is another one, this time taken with an 8mm (16mm equivalent) Zuiko Digital fisheye lens:

This time I used 70x 30 second exposures for a total exposure time of 35 minutes.

Re: Star trails

Never tried this - must have a go whilst it's still reasonably warm (and a clear night, which it isn't tonight!) There's very little light pollution in the village where I live, so perhaps I shan't have to resort to getting in the car...

Both great shots Ian - I've scrolled up and down and really can't pick a favourite.

Re: Star trails

I'm going to have a go, conditions permitting, at star trails tonight here in suburban Hemel Hempstead (the forecast seems to be clear for tonight). You can see stars here at night despite the light pollution so I should be able to get something...

Re: Star trails

There you go, even with light pollution in suburbia you can get quite decent star trails:

My problem this evening was that half way through the sequence the clouds arrived so I had to stop at 46 images (30 seconds each) or 23 minutes.

Here is the whole sequence as a time lapse movie:
