Photo critique Here is where you can display your images and seek the comment, advice and, maybe, constructive critique of your work. Only post your images here if you are happy for frank feedback. If in doubt, use the beginners board instead. Only post your comments here if you feel you can make a constructive and polite contribution in response to what is, for some, a leap of faith in exposing their work to your critical comment.

California Sea Lions

A favorite black & white conversion of a pair of California Sea Lions. Hand-held, no cropping.

Re: California Sea Lions

That's a nice example of low-key mono photography.

Thanks very much, Garry. You know how the saying goes in photography that you can learn to "see" in black & white before the photo is taken. In this case there was an obvious coloration, contrast difference to the fur in these two sea lions and I thought nothing quite says "contrast" like black & white and therefore, I thought it'd be a good candidate for this type of presentation.

I'm pleased you like it and I have many other examples I intend on sharing with everyone here.

Tony

Re: California Sea Lions

Here's a few more examples of the type "side-lighting" I enjoy. The last image provides an example of a "hide-and-seek" effect, which in this case has a portion of the jaw "missing" and our brain simply "completes" the image. I strongly favor the darker end of the exposure spectrum. Hand-held, no cropping.

4.

5. hide-and-seek effect
