Old new member from Down South in the USA

Greetings,

I found my way over here from Ianís Four Thirds User Forum.

Just to look around. Really, that's all.

But I liked what I saw here.

And so here I am joining!

Look forward to exploring a bit as I have time.

Best regards,

Russ

And I saw this picture, which I REALLY liked (Kurt's "Should I crop more off this?" In the Photo critique section). I may try to see if I can post an idea about it in that thread if I can manage to!

Nice to have you here Ross. The more new faces the better! What's your main interest in photography?

Ian

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the welcome.

As to your question, that's a good question!
I've sort of wondered about that myself!

You know you see a movie or a documentary about a movie director, and he's walking around with his thumb and forefinger of each hand together making a rectangle, like he's looking at the world through a camera?

I've decided that must be sort of what I do.
I go through life and just "see" pictures around and then try to capture them.

But it could be ANYthing.

- a macro of a diamond stylus in a wooden cartridge body
- some of my father's old guns from WWII
- a series of dilapidated tornado shelters along this one road I drive a lot
- a picture of a framed picture by a photographer friend of mine with candles and incense as a tribute to him

No theme, no "interest" just when I see something that needs photographing, I photograph it.
Maybe I'm a documentarian.

... no WAIT, I just figured it out

It's MEDITATION!
I practice "slow photography." (once I saw an article or blog or something by a guy named Tim Wu that sort of got at this issue, but I've lost the link to it)
I'm not a quick clicker, shoot a thousand and weed 'em out.
I'm deliberate, I linger over shots. (maybe partly because I'm old, grew up shooting film when every click of the shutter cost you money!)
Fiddle with composition, dof, WB, maybe move over there a ways, re-do.
And while I'm doing all this, I'm NOT THINKING! (obsessing? )
About the world, terrorism, money, etc.
I'm free of all that for a while, just lost in trying to create this image.
Yeah, my "interest" in photography is its therapeutic value.

Jeepers!
Well, you asked!

Russ

Hi Russ II -

Welcome.

When I see my wife composing a shot it readily comes to mind watching her father who was an avid shooter. Like you he was a film man - not sure he would like digital except for the saving on film. Now I'm the guy who sees a scene and I have to take several because I know when I'm home I'll remember the one I didn't take.
At least I haven't worn a shutter button out yet.

Regards. Barr1e
