My friend in Majorca has this:

HOTSPOT SHIELD
Warning: unknown local network with 192.168.1.1
it could watch what you do and share this information with others


(box containing a tick) Automatically turn on Hotspot Shield when conneccted to this network


Remember this choice Ask me later


pop up every time she turns on her computer.

Does anyone know what it means?

There is a utility called Hotspot Shield. But if he/she didn't download it and install it herself then it should be treated as suspicious. I think it's freeware with a paid for version with more features available, see:

Reading the link from Ian I get the impression that you actually rent the paid version and never actually own it outright while the freebie takes over your search engine and homepage. Neither way looks good to me.
