The right low key mood or just too dark?

I wouldn't say it was too dark but it does seem to be rather 'flat', slightly lacking in contrasts and 'vitality' - if that's the right way of putting it.

Maybe it might be better if you could lift the boats, possibly brighten the boat and the people a bit more to give it more prominence? Something to give it just a bit more punch?

I think my mistake was in not adjusting the colour levels when converting from colour - I will revisit that and repost an alternative shot in due course.

Adjusting the mono conversion colour mix didn't do much so I simple played with clarity, exposure and contrast. I think this is an improvement:

Yes that's a huge improvement. It has much more life about it yet still maintains the mood.

I don't like the bright fringe along the tree line on the horizon - a typical symptom of over-processing!

I noticed that too but didn't bother mentioning it as I knew you'd sort it out when you do your final copy (starting again with the full file).

I'd boost the exposure personally. Can see what you are doing but it's a bit flat, like Pol says.

I think on your first picture the red filter would have helped it dramatically.. I would increae exposure a little on the boat.. for me that is too dark..
