It would really help if we could know roughly what you know and don't know. You have a DSLR and its standard zoom lens, which is a good start. What do you use for editing your photos software-wise?
Basically it's essential to understand exposure, which means the interaction between light, ISO sensitivity, aperture settings and shutter speed. Once you understand how these interact then everything else gets easier. Later we can move onto composition, the creative use of focus, categories of photography like portraiture, action, portraiture, macro, still-life, abstract, etc.
