First Day with Olympus OMD E M5

Hi All,

Been quite a while since I have been out and about with a camera. My work life balance has been a little squeezed in one direction.

Anyway last weekend got a day out with the Olympus OMD. It was the day after delivery so bear with me whilst I learn what this camera can do. In summary loving using it. The EVF is great, the AF very responsive and as you will see below I love the art filters.

All the pictures below are jpegs straight from the camera. The border was added on an iPad and uploaded from there. Had no time to go anywhere near the raw files yet.

Anyway still learning the menu system but happy to answer any questions if people have any.

Best Regards

Josh
PS. Apologies for the photo frenzy

The first thing that struck me was the intensity of the colours and the sharpness throughout.

Hi Pops

Yes I agree. I was using the kit lens for most and occasionally the Panasonic 20mm lens. Both seem suited to this camera.

Just waiting for Olympus to ship my free grip and then will post on how that alters handling.

Best regards

Josh

A great first set, Josh. I'm glad you are enjoying the camera and I hope you find a little more time for your photography.

Re: First Day with Olympus OMD E M5

Hi Josh - there is something a bit weird about the diagonal edge details on some of these. I think these are sharpening artefacts?

E-M5 RAW files are now supported in Lightroom 4.1RC2. The latest release ACR plug-in for CS5 also supports the E-M5 and CS6 ACR 7.1 (which may be a release candidate).

Thanks Ian. Just downloaded the 4.1rc. Re the edges no post processing done so not sure what it could be. Will check the camera settings. Could be the iPad app I use has some level of sharpening as default. Will check that too.

Best regards

Josh

Yes - sharpening and/or resizing would be the obvious culprits - just in case it's a problem just at my end can you see what I'm on about?

I have to say they all look fine on my PC screen too. I've been over and over them and I just can't see any obvious problems as described by Ian.

Ian, was it the Helter Skelter picci where you saw a problem with a diagonal? I ask because there's a sort of 'fluted frlled' edge on one section of the slide but I think that's part of the structure, a trim on the edge of the wood.

I can still see the jaggies on my smartphone and on two different PC browsers.

Aye, I think I can see some slight jaggies on the Helter Skelter now (more noticeable on the B/W picture on the top rim of that "see the fair from here" sign.

I'd imagine they're likely to be from resizing as it's an 'all curves and sweeps picci' - being as it's Helter Skelter.

Is that mainly where you're seeing jaggies?

Re: First Day with Olympus OMD E M5

Olympus has, this morning, officially announced its latest Micro Four Thirds lens, the m.Zuiko 75mm f/1.8. I have had a chance to use a pre production sample and it's superb lens, if not particularly affordable. See my hands-on preview article here:

Re: First Day with Olympus OMD E M5

Hi looks like a great lens but I think I might go for the 45mm. The cost difference is huge.

Best regards.

Re: First Day with Olympus OMD E M5

Resized a camera image uploaded to my Galaxy Note and got the same jaggy artefacts. Used an app called QuickPic. Will try some others...
