I recall that A1 was an remarkable model in the sense that it had both shutter priority AE as well as aperture priority AE. Those were the days when Nikon and Canon as well as others were noisily arguing which AE was most sperior.
Canon AE-1 had only shutter priorty AE and Nikon F3, although it was the flagship model, had only apperture priority AE.

Canon presented the clear-cut answer, together with Minolta. Why not having the both and Prrogram mode as well?

My understanding is that the Canon AE-1 prevented the company from going bust. The A1 and the AE-1 Program were all best sellers after the AE-1 and Canon never looked back. One of the first SLRs I used was a borrowed Canon FTb - it took very good pictures but it was huge and weighed a ton. The very high specification Canon F1 was not a successful professional camera because of the Nikon F series, but then neither were the Pentax LX, nor the Minolta XM.
