Arrow DPNow.com Photo Fix Challenge 8 - infra red!

Here is a summary or excerpt from an article that has just been published on DPNow:

It's time for our 8th DPNow.com Photo Fix challenge and this times we're doing things rather differently. First of all there are four choices of photo to work your magic on, and for the first time they are all near infra red images. Do you opt for the surreal delights of a false colour cornucopia of delights, or a stunning greyscale interpretation. We can't wait to see what you decide!

Re: DPNow.com Photo Fix Challenge 8 - infra red!

Just one more week to go and not very many entries, perhaps because it's an unusual challenge?

Why not have a go?

Sorry I missed this Eddie - 5MB is quite generous for a JPEG. Are you finding it difficult to get under 5MB?

Re: DPNow.com Photo Fix Challenge 8 - infra red!

Hi Ian,

I don't have the file infront of me but I'm sure when i initially saved it it came in around 10mb. :-/

Anyhow I ended up leaving it as max quality but reducing canvas size to shrink the file and sent it over on Friday.

Oh yes - I see it. Which software do you use? In Photoshop you can adjust the JPEG compression easily to suit a target file size and you can compress quite a lot without affecting image quality. It's if you compress a JPEG again (maybe after re-editing) that IQ issues can appear.

Re: DPNow.com Photo Fix Challenge 8 - infra red!

I was using Photoshop Elements 9. I didn't want to drop the quality too much as i don't know how quickly it degrades. Space isn't an issue for me so I save everything on maximum.

Should I resend as same size but lower quality or is it ok as is?

With Elements 9 you can save JPEGs at a quality level of 8 or even lower. Best not compromise the framing if you feel it would be better un-cropped. It's up to you

Re: DPNow.com Photo Fix Challenge 8 - infra red!

Entries close on Friday, so not much time left!

And we have had fewer entries than usual because of the specialist nature of the challenge - but it's not actually as difficult as it seems, honest! See my article on infra red photography here:
