Self taught, love social documentary work... totally hit a brick wall now... any ideas on how to actually get 'anywhere' within the genre?... any views warmly appreciated... and thoughts upon my photographs too : )

Huge thanks,

Jim

Jim - a very warm welcome to DPNow. Just to help everyone find your photos - you are one of the few to use the forum albums facility, here is where to find them:

http://dpnow.com/forum2/album.php?albumid=10

The DPNow gallery is the more usual way of display your photos here.

This is also where we source the site's Picture of the Days from.

Your photography is very powerful - I like it a lot. It does seem to focus on one specialist subject area, so maybe you need to widen your scope? OK - maybe that's something you know already, apologies if I have stated the obvious!

Are there any alternative subjects that you have considered but not been too sure of. Maybe we can discuss these?

Ian

Re: Where next?

Hi Ian,

yes, I do shoot cross genre, but my passion is Social Documentary, people, real stories, real life... so my question is... where next?... I've had a modicum of success via competitions, newspapers, BBC, but I am at a point where I feel I want to work more... exhibit... and I'm a fish out of water in this respect!... so any advice is appreciated : )

Cheers,

Jim

Re: Where next?

An exhibition sounds like a great idea. Our Danish member, Peder Winge, is on the verge presenting his photos in his first exhibition.

Is photography a hobby or your livelihood?

Re: Where next?

I've been included in a few exhibitions, and I am working on a book... it's a hobby as I work full time as a carer... but I'm looking to make headway into doing more with my photography... so putting my ear to the ground for some advice = )

Many thanks,

Jim

Re: Where next?

I'm sure you will get some feedback from some of our regulars here. But in a way, I wonder if we can simply offer encouragement as in the end for you it's all about your personal interest and motivation. But in the mean time we can admire what you have achieved up to now.

Re: Where next?

Yeah, I agree... : ) Thanks Ian, it would a lot easier for me if I lived in a city rather than an highly rural area I think... but its a double edged sword... as where I live is what my photographs are all about!...

Re: Where next?

I wonder if you could start with a small display in your local library. Word of mouth may then throw up more opportunities.

Re: Where next?

How about making a short film or stills (photo) documentary by enlisting your subjects help about what 'self expression' in artform or whatever means to them & their lives! How it gives them a reason for being....or sense of being valued! Perhaps even how it changes or could change facets of their lives Many organizations have docos promoting their existance or need for support! This may be a way to go!
