Arrow Photokina 2008 - Camera torture video

Here is a summary or excerpt from an article that has just been published on DPNow:

At Photokina 2008 camera manufacturers have been keen to show how their special ruggedised models can cope with some serious abuse. We've video recorded some of the demonstrations that put the cameras on the rack, including a camera smashing machine on the Olympus booth.

Nice to have that extra reassurance that I don't need to be quite so neurotic about sand when I'm at the coast with the K10D + 16-50 lens attached ... ie one of the latest/modern sealed lenses.

You can't quite see it in the video but inside the box there was a blower running that was flicking particles of sand over the camera.

Yep, I got the general idea from the end result with the kit lyinh in all that sand.

I'm still pleased it wasn't my camera and lens they used for the demo though. Imagine trying to remove all that sand off it before you stuffed it back in yer kit bag.

Was there a protection filter on the front of the lens and did the mechanism kinda grind and scrape after they removed it from the sand? Did anyone get the chance to handle it and test it afterwards?

I'm not so neurotic when I'm at the coast and using that particular camera/lens combination ... but I still can't imgine myself ever putting it down on a sandy beach!

Re: Photokina 2008 - Camera torture video

There is a trick to improve the resolution of playback from Youtube by adding &fmt=18 or &fmt=6 to the url of the video you want to watch.

Unfortunately, the enhancement won't work on the forum, but it's worth trying when viewing youtube videos directly.
