Photo critique Here is where you can display your images and seek the comment, advice and, maybe, constructive critique of your work. Only post your images here if you are happy for frank feedback. If in doubt, use the beginners board instead. Only post your comments here if you feel you can make a constructive and polite contribution in response to what is, for some, a leap of faith in exposing their work to your critical comment.

Model still/motion blur experiment

I was very fortunate to be a guest at a What Digital Camera magazine workshop for the new Olympus OM-D E-M5 last Saturday. Here is one shot that came out quite well I think.

This was an experimental shot with the cooperation of the models (Mariana on the left and Sadie on the right) being directed:

The idea was for Mariana to be still and sharp while Sadie walked past in a motion blur. This was in a pedestrian underpass just off the beach in Brighton and the lighting was a mixture of old fluorescent tubes and some natural light from the entrance. Exposure was f/4.5 @1/10th second, ISO 200. Mariana was moving a little so she is very slightly blurred - not that obvious from a Web resolution version of the image here, although the wind has nicely blurred some of her hair. Finally, I added a fairly strong (40) post crop vignette in Lightroom 4.

Comments of any type (within reason!) welcome

Ian

Re: Model still/motion blur experiment

Maybe it's just a question of taste but I feel the colour tones are a bit too cold. As a result, Mariana's skin looks slightly too blue.

Could you perhaps tweak the colour balance slightly - maybe approx with the sliders about 10-15 from blue towards yellow in the midtones and perhaps slightly less on the highlights and shadows. Just a slight tweak might warm things up .

OK, I think you are right, but it only needs a subtle tweak

Thumbs up Re: Model still/motion blur experiment

That's much better.

FWIW - I like the effect of the vignette very much too. It somehow brings out the dof rather nicely and also helps create the atmosphere of an underpass.

Re: Model still/motion blur experiment

I like the idea of movement in a still photograph and this one works well. It's often difficult to come up with something different and this is a great example.

Thanks John, I have plenty more from Last Saturday but haven't yet had a chance to sort through them all. I will try to get some other up later today.
