Simply try uninstalling Lightroom, I think after you re-install your library will still be intact, this may do the trick.
If no improvement empty your library uninstall LT and start again.

Not a bad spec computer should handle LT5 OK, my MacBook with a 2.8GHz CPU but more RAM namely 8GB handles LT5 without any problem.

Ok if you don't fancy the slide copy method in truth tried and tested, the a scanner is your option.
Beware of cheap dedicated scanners claiming high resolutions they will probably be in fact low...

The idea is very sound but an easier method essentially the same, is to use a slide copier, they can still be found at camera fairs and eBay.

That was in film days, under or over expose then modify the develop time to compensate affected the contrast of the negative. Digital can do the same but its to the best of my knowledge strictly done...
