Don't know where you went for your quote but Boots and SpecSavers will do varifocals a lot cheaper than 400+ . I have used vaifocal for very many years my last pair with the extras like...

That was in film days, under or over expose then modify the develop time to compensate affected the contrast of the negative. Digital can do the same but its to the best of my knowledge strictly done...

You don't say whether you are using JPG or RAW, if JPG (bearing in mind JPG files throw away up to 60% of the information the camera captures which is then rebuilt in the computer) the in camera...

It's possible the 2x will give better results on a prime lens, I used mine on the 120-300, its true to say it wasn't bad, but without the results were that bit crisper.

If you want sharp images the old fashioned none tech way may prove more successful. That is turn off your auto focus and pre-focus. That is select and focus on a point you know where the riders will...

Please set up a Photographic Society rather than a camera club.

My pet hate is the term Camera club suggests greater interest in the gear rather than making pictures.
