My brother is wanting to buy his first computer. (He is 60!)

Basicly he wants it for surfing the net, (he has an old Vincent motorbike and would like to follow what goes on on their website). He has a vague interest in photography and with two new granddaughters, I feel that this could grow.

Can you suggest a Laptop (he doesn't want a PC) that would be suitable for his requirements.

I don't really know much about Laptops as I have never owned one.

Obviously he doesn't want to be struggling for processing speed or RAM.

Although money is not really an issue, I don't think he wants to be throwing it away unnessarily.

He had looked at John Lewis and had seen them around £500+ which he felt was more than he wanted to pay, bearing in mind his lack of knowledge at this stage.

So, something for surfing and doing pics, probably just for personal use.

Any ideas would be very helpful.

Thanks in anticipation.

Anne and I spent several hours earlier this week taking pix of men and their model gliders, some six feet in length with wingspans so much larger. This was a test for us having not photographed objects at speed. Also, of course waiting for the craft to turn so the sun showed them to advantage.

Nearby, was a subject that is close to my heart - the countryside in which we try and walk miles each week - one must burn the calorie intake from good home cooking which we indulge in at the various hostelries accompanied by the local brew (ale).

Here is a pic I wish you to comment on in a friendly way, I hope.

It's a rural scene without the gliders!!

Hi All,

Has anyone had any experience with the following lens:

Sigma - Telephoto zoom lens - 135 mm - 400 mm - f/4.5-5.6 DG APO Aspherical - Canon EF

I am very tempted to invest, I was primarily going to change my Canon 75-300mm lens like for like, as I have loved this lens ever since I bought it used from Ian.

So, what would you do, upgrade to the Sigma (if indeed it is an upgrade) or keep with what you know and love. Or do you have an alternative for me to consider?

I went to this place on Sunday, because of their charity and refuge status they are only allowed to open 6 days a year, which they get most funding.
The place as walking around does need a lot of help and funding and you can see they are struggling in some areas. But it was a pleasant day out and will be going and supporting on their next open days. There was birds with wings and crippled feet, monkeys that had come from some terrible situations. parrots and budgies, to a lynx and a ocelot. They take animals in from rspca and other refuges.
While we were there some children were running around and scaring the animals and the parents could not have cared, bare in mind some of these animals have been traumatised already. One child was trying to get into everything and his mother could not have cared less.

BUT
An adult thought it would be fun to play with a little capuchino monkey and rattle a pen at the bars, as you can imagine the monkey took it. I give the staff and volunteers full top marks for being polite with this group who thought it was hilarious,
The staff spent nearly half an hour trying to coax the pen of the monkey before they seriously damaged them selves or got ink poisoning.

Anyway anyone that knows me will not be surprised I have adopted an owl for a year for £20.
her name is Heidi

and she sat there so regal looking

not sure allowed to do this, if not I will remove with a sorry.:o
if you would like to have a look at the site

Went to a very interesting workshop last Friday, by ColourConfidence as part of the evening Adobe RGB and sRGB were discussed.
Now I have been a firm advocate of Adobe RGB but what I leaned Friday threw me off balance.
Bearing in mind these people specialize in colour management I was very surprised to note they would recommend sRGB over Adobe RGB colour space.
They accept RGB is the wider space they argue sRGB is easily controlled.
They did however add a footnote saying if any photographer was getting the results they want using Adobe RGB then don't change because they say so, but did suggest the individual test it out for themselves.
Simple take a picture with plenty of colour variety in both modes, and see where it takes them. Which is fair enough.
They did tell a story of how in the studio the speaker in his pro photo days was photographing a Red Ferrari, but try as they may, even with top well profiled equipment at their disposal, the car would always print dark red/maroon.
2 days they struggled, until an inexperienced helper suggested conversion to sRGB these experts laughed but to their surprise when they tried it, it printed the true Ferrari Red.
He did go on to explain why, something to do with the bigger space leading to bigger steps.
Also to my surprise Monitors, scanners and printers are all sRGB so it makes sense if the camera colour space is also sRGB.

I shall be doing some test myself

Hi Guys

Not been about with the camera the last few weeks - busy at work all the usual wrong things.

Question - I'm looking at having a go at some indoor flash photography - I would like to buy one of those systems that you see around the shopping centres where folk are taking pictures of young folk.

Can anyone advise or point me in the right direction of an article or two.

Cheers Dave R
