a image can be technically perfect but clinically dead. this is the first statement made in PPA judging school. what does this mean to you?

Because my passion is portraiture, I understand what you mean by 'clinically dead'. I look for eye contact as much as possible because although some portraits can tell their own story, eye contact not only engages me with the subject but gives it 'soul' in a split second, a captured moment preserved forever. I would much rather take pictures with a soul than be technically perfect.

exactly, a new mother looks at the hospital picture of her new born. correct posing, lighting etc. i doubt it but initial impact, priceless.

we can pose, bracket the exposure, and even crop using the rule of thirds, but if it doesn't have impact or in the case of portraits, emotion, it's dead.

I've often stated that technical perfection is secondary to capturing the essence of a picture. Looks like we agree

we do agree, the mechanics of photography must be second nature. you must be able to capture the fleeting moment be it expression or action on the film or sensor rather than watch in the viewfinder while making adjustments.
