Thanks very much to PJPhoto for running competition no. 73.

I've looked back through the huge list of past themes, in an effort to choose a subject that we haven't had before. It wasn't easy, but I think/hope I've found one that will suit almost everyone one. So the theme for Salon no. 74 is:

Bright Colours

Here are the rules:

1) All photographs are to be uploaded to the photo gallery at http://dpnow.com/galleries/, they can be put in members own gallery if they wish. The resulting link generated for the photo will then be pasted into the next available space in the Salon thread. Please keep photos to a maximum of 800 pixels wide so people can see the whole image without scrolling.

2) One entry per user ID only please, which must be the personal work of the entrant.

3) Entries should be "in line" within the thread (not as links to an image held somewhere else.)

4) Comments only on entries are welcome within the salon thread itself.

5) After the close the curator will indicate a winner and a couple of runners up.

6) The curators decision is final.

7) Winners should be offered first refusal to choose the next theme and curate the next salon.

8 ) If the winner is unable to curate the next salon the current curator may offer that "honour" to any willing volunteer, possibly the entrant in second or third place.

9) These rules are to be copied and pasted with the new theme by the curator at the top of the new salon thread with a finish date and time.

10) As with all photos posted on DPNow,copyright remains the photographer and DPNow will not use them without permission.

The Prize is the choice of either CF 8GB Ultimate or a SDHC 8GB Class 6 memory card.

The closing date is midday (GMT) on 1st November 2009. Have fun everyone!

Hi,
This is my entry. A trip to photograph Mt Grey had an unexpected bonus of a field of canola planted on a hillside. I love the intense yellow of the plant and the contrast with the green/blue of the hill and the blue of the sky.

What a lovely happy picture. I once set a challenge "Blowing in the Wind" - it would have been a good entry.

Tim, your image isn't showing and I can't manage to fix it. Can you try using the 'My Pics' link - the link beneath the Smilies. If you click on that your gallery pics will open in a pop-up window. Just choose the picci you want to display then select "Inline' and 'Original Image' from the dropdown menus along the top of the pop-up window.
The 'My Pics' link is the quickest and easiest way to show a gallery pic in a forum posting.

P.S. All sorted now. The 'My Pics' link is still the quickest and easiest but the other alternative is to use the image link from the medium image but remove medium from the url and that enables the original image to be displayed instead of the smaller(medium) version.

Hiya Pol. Thanks for eventually getting the link sorted - I appreciate it.

Stephen called over earlier and gave me a quick course in posting images here at DPNow, so in future there should be no problems...............at least not relating to the linking of forum posts to gallery pics, anyway

And the winners are...

Third place: Autumn - a lovely composition, with no distracting background elements, and it certainly fits the theme of bright colours perfectly,

Second place: Bearface - a very interesting light in this one, with the chains leading the eye into the frame perfectly. The deep blue of the sky sets off the coloured houses nicely.

First place: Jojo - a fascinating subject. Is this a native UK species? I love it! The 'bokeh' background really makes the subject stand out too.

Special mention to Stephen - I realy, really wanted to fit your image into the top three as well, and it was a tough decision not to.

So thanks, everyone - a very interesting selection of images.

Over to Jojo!

I think you have three worthy winners anyway so well done and many congrats to jojo, I really do think that's a great picture.

Well blow me down - didn't expect to take that one! *clapTo Tim and Audrey and yes, Stephen's was pretty sublime too! Thank you RI for a subject that, on the face of it seemed easy, but did prove challenging. I'll get my thinking cap on and post the next theme tomorrow.

jo:)

p.s. By the way it's a "Sally Lightfoot" crab from the Galapagos Islands (I have been very fortunate to have visited these islands and can only describe them as utterly amazing; would go back at the drop of a hat).

p.p.s Found this on Wikipedia: "Apparently Sally Lightfoot crabs are thought to have been named for a sultry nightclub dancer from Guayaquil, whose alluring performances in her red and yellow dress, captivated 19th century sailors."

Congratulations Jojo, a very good image, also to Bearface (nice to see you back). Thanks for placing my contribution 3rd RI - there were many very good entries.

Thanks also for running the salon RI and Jojo I look forward to seeing what you have to offer.

I am in Majorca staying with friends until Thursday and am just having a quick browse on my friend´s computer, so it was a nice surprise to see I had a placement.

See ya!

BTW The sea is rough today and so I have been on their balcony with filters 8+4+2 to see if I could get a good result. Used a tripod. BFN.

There were great entries and it must have been hard for ryme-intrinseca, who did a great job on the Salon, to make a choice. Well done all!
