Some of my images which I want to have a shallow DOF, have a clear background and a subject out of focus, while I try to achieve quite opposite results. I have a point and shoot camera, and I shoot in ‘aperture priority’ mode, I usually use f4.0 or f4.8. Do you have any idea how I can improve my shallow DOF images?

Hi Molja,

Your camera may have a Macro mode, which will do the trick! Get up close and personal to the image, and ensure the focus is on the subject matter.

Sometimes point and shoot cameras have a multipoint focus system, make sure this is turned off, and just use the centre point (it will focus quicker as well), you can always focus on something off centre by shifting the camera to focus anyway.

Also, using the low f-value, in a combination with zooming in, will accentuate the the limited DoF.

Hope that helps!
Ben

What type of subjects are you shooting? Macro settings might help, but might cause other problems with the image.
