I'm looking for an LCD monitor that is good enough to do accurate photo editing, as well as being flexible enough to be a multi purpose (video watching, web surfing) monitor. I've exhausted NEC and LG, and I'm looking into Eizo Nano, Apple, Viewsonic and LaCie.

Viewsonic - Pro Series seems to have brightness/contrast issues. Highlights are blown and darker areas loose detail. But what about their graphics series? Anyone have any experience?

Eizo Nano - Seems to be a good possibility, but there is no local retailer in the state that I live.. and I hate to buy something without looking at it. Any Eizo users want to speak to their products.

Apple – Don’t know much about apples. I have a PC and they’ve only recently made them compatible. Opinions?

LaCie – Gold standard for sure, but pricy.. and is okay to use as a general purpose monitor too, or really only worth it’s price as a graphics display?

Also, Calibrators? I've never used one, and I need suggestions.

Hi Libby - welcome to the DPNow forum!

Out of interest, why has NEC dropped off your list?

The problem with looking at a monitor in a shop is that you don't know if it has been set up properly. I think you are right in asking the opinions of owners and of course I'd recommend that you look at reviews. I find Sony, Samsung, NEC, Eizo (Nanao) and iiyama (not sure if this brand is available in the USA) to be very good, though most brands have some models that are not as good as the others. I've also heard some good things about Dell monitors.

I'd go for as high a resolution as possible.

Hi Libby-
Not to say that I know much about monitors.....but I did recently read a review of 5 or 6 monitors in a photography mag from the usual brand names and they listed Dell as tops....as Ian mentioned...could be something worth looking into.
