Thanks to Philip for running the last salon and picking such a great subject. So - now its my turn:).

The subject I have chosen is

CANDID PHOTOGRAPHY

Wikipedia defines this sort of photography as "un-posed and unplanned, immediate and unobtrusive" (Personally, I query the 'unplanned' bit, in that you still need to make sure you are in the right place, with the camera ready to take the shot in order to get a great candid capture).

So, lets see what you can make of this - could be friends or family in an unguarded moment, a participant in a formal event caught in an informal pose, or strangers in a public place in a shot which tells a story. (NB - if taking photographs of people in a public place please respect local laws and customs).

deadline for entries is 20.00 BST on Friday 8 May 2009

Here are the rules. Please take a moment to read them prior to shooting or uploading your submissions.

1) All photographs are to be uploaded to the photo gallery at http://dpnow.com/galleries/, they can be put in members own gallery if they wish. The resulting link generated for the photo will then be pasted into the next available space in the Salon thread. Please keep photos to a maximum of 800 pixels wide so people can see the whole image without scrolling.

2) One entry per user ID only please, which must be the personal work of the entrant.

3) Entries should be "in line" within the thread (not as links to an image held somewhere else.)

4) Comments only on entries are welcome within the salon thread itself.

5) After the close the curator will indicate a winner and a couple of runners up.

6) The curators decision is final.

7) Winners should be offered first refusal to choose the next theme and curate the next salon.

If the winner is unable to curate the next salon the current curator may offer that "honour" to any willing volunteer, possibly the entrant in second or third place.

9) These rules are to be copied and pasted with the new theme by the curator at the top of the new salon thread with a finish date and time.

10) As with all photos posted on DPNow,copyright remains the photographer and DPNow will not use them without permission.

The Prize is the choice of either CF 8GB Ultimate or a SDHC 8GB Class 6 memory card.

Regards,

Neil

Despite the fact that this chap is clearly an excruciating poseur I kind of like this one.

Altogether now - "Bloody stoodents, get a job/haircut etc..." *LOL

Here's mine - A band called The Fore were playing live in the town centre last week, the sun was shining and the crowds were out. It was a lovely day. Good job I keep my Panasonic Lumix in my bag.

RESULT!

Thanks to all who entered, I've really enjoyed judging this one - some great photos!

So - in time honoured reverse order,

In joint third place, (cop-out, I know!) Its Ekkl and Rogleal's entries. I love both these photographs which are so different in style and composition but both tell a compelling story - the old man counting his pennies so evocative of frugality and concentration. The young couple so clearly joined in love of each other and love of the countryside, even though as they read their books they are neither directly communicating with each other or with the countryside - they are just there, together. Lovely!

Runner-up is Jojo with her fantastic photograph of the groom as his bride enters. The expression of love, trepidation and anticipation is priceless.

My winner, though, is Veggiesosage's picture of the street-guitarist. A solitary young man plays on the street with no-one around (is he that bad??!)For me, an image that draws you in with questions of who is he? what is he doing? (practicing, being a poseur, playing for his own pleasure, busking?). All in all I think this is a great candid street photograph.

So - Congratulations to Veggisosage, and over to you for the next one.

Regards,

Neil.

Cool! Thanks Cogito and thanks for the good wishes all.

I'm pleased about this cos I've just got back after having had my camera and laptop being robbed in a burglary. Took a while for the insurance and that to get sorted and replacements bought but we're there now.

I'll get me thinking cap on for the next one...:D
