DP Salon Competition No 62 - STREETS
________________________________________
Fortnightly Salon Competition No. 62

STREETS

Thanks to Audrey for running the last competition and for everyone submitting great images. :)

For this Salon I could envision images of urban city streets, country lanes or futuristic highways…It could be in the day or at night, full of cars or completely empty, any photo that prominently includes the roads we get around on everyday.

Deadline for entries is Midnight GMT on Wednesday April 22, 2009
Here are the rules. Please take a moment to read them prior to shooting or uploading your submissions.

1) All photographs are to be uploaded to the photo gallery at http://dpnow.com/galleries/, they can be put in members own gallery if they wish. The resulting link generated for the photo will then be pasted into the next available space in the Salon thread. Please keep photos to a maximum of 800 pixels wide so people can see the whole image without scrolling.

2) One entry per user ID only please, which must be the personal work of the entrant.

3) Entries should be "in line" within the thread (not as links to an image held somewhere else.)

4) Comments only on entries are welcome within the salon thread itself.

5) After the close the curator will indicate a winner and a couple of runners up.

6) The curators decision is final.

7) Winners should be offered first refusal to choose the next theme and curate the next salon.

If the winner is unable to curate the next salon the current curator may offer that "honour" to any willing volunteer, possibly the entrant in second or third place.

9) These rules are to be copied and pasted with the new theme by the curator at the top of the new salon thread with a finish date and time.

10) As with all photos posted on DPNow,copyright remains the photographer and DPNow will not use them without permission.

The Prize is the choice of either CF 8GB Ultimate or a SDHC 8GB Class 6 memory card.

Thanks so much and Have fun!
Philip

Good subject Phil.

I had intended to put a note somewhere BEFORE this salon began, just drawing people's attention to Rule 1 above. Here is an extract:

"Please keep photos to a maximum of 800 pixels wide so people can see the whole image without scrolling."

I would also like to add that some people attached their entries last time as "Thumbnails" and I had to open them to see the photograph.

I actually downloaded everyone's entry into Lightroom so that I could see them altogether - it was a lovely sight, but when some are oversized and I have to scroll and some are thumbs, it makes it very difficult for the Curator.

Good luck everyone in this new salon and have a happy Easter.

Hi Audrey, thanks for the tips...thats a great idea about loading them into another application for easier viewing, thanks!

And what a great first image to start off the salon Peder. Keep them coming!

I think part of the problem is that at the moment when the code from the gallery picture is copied and pasted it includes the word 'thumbs/' and this needs to be deleted so the full photo appears. I actually have edited a few recently, but must have missed some

No problems with the size of this. I spent most of last year driving around Europe in the Smart Car. By this time I had smashed my camera and took this with my phone looking back the way we had come. It is very high in the Dolomites in Northern Italy whilst on our way to Austria.

Yes Stephen, thanks, I thought that originally I had seen a lot more thumbs. On the last day, there was only one left, but I had to look into his gallery to see the picture properly.

Also forgot to say that Phil has chosen a good subject - I don't think we have had anything like that before.

Thanks Kurt -

Anne and I have spent some time trying to remember and we can't recall exactly where. We were on a touring holiday which covered France, Spain and Portugal. So the plot thickens even more....

The reason I asked is because I drove from the Rioja region to Leon a few years ago and your attractive shot put me in mind of the beautiful countryside we went through.

Nice one, Horacio.

Cogito . . .Stamford looks very different to what it did in the 60s no pedestrian zone then. I actually worked near there then for almost half a day. I was late my first morning and didn't go back after lunch. Plenty of work in those days, I had another job by the end of the week!

I like the effect and would be interested to know how it was achieved. Camera, lens or image editor?

A Street in York City, England

I can't seem to improve the quality. It's fine before I reduce it!:\

After having a moan about people posting images too big, I have now done the same. When I made it smaller, the quality was terrible.

Anyway, if you press F11 you can see it without scrolling.*LOL

I used photoshop to add some lens blurring to give a "tiltshift" effect - that gives the minaturisation feel that Gina mentioned. Hopefully not too much to take away from the original image, tho.....

Hundreds (if not thousands) of tourists travel this road every day en route to Namibia's stunning sand dunes. The road starts at the Sesriem gate and wends its way for 60 kms through the Namib Naukluft National Park before terminating at the famous clay pan of Sossusvlei. One road in, one road out. Apologies for the size (it was already in my gallery :\) please f11

Kingston has informed me that they are phasing out all 4GB Compact Flash cards. So the competition prizes have been changed to a CF 8GB Ultimate or a SDHC 8GB Class 6. This change will apply from this Salon onwards.

Thanks for the heads up Julia, how times change, the first CF card I bought was 64mb and it cost £75. 8GB was unthinkable then

Not an easy subject for me at this time of year. Beautiful weather, all the schools in the Paris zone still on holiday, almost impossible to find a street not full of tourist cars and kids!

Hi, I would like to dismiss my first contribution to this Streets Saloon because it is too serious!!!!
I prefer to include the following picture as my representative instead of the former one.It was taken in a chilling winter morning in Time Square, NY.
As this guy was allowed to sing in a public space, I hope nobody will get upset!!!

Actually as I figure it here in San Diego which is -8 hrs GMT the SALON HAS CLOSED.

Actually midnight GMT is 11PM British Summer Time. As the US and UK are both on summer time, 11PM GMT -8 hours is midnight BST (if you follow!) on the US West Coast :D

So by my clock (22:20 BST) there are 40 minutes left!

Ian

PS PJP - do check your forum email :)

Let me just correct myself!

Midnight GMT is 1AM BST (we're one hour ahead for summer!). So actually it was just 9:20PM GMT, there was two hours and 40 minutes left!

A BIG Thank you to everyone who entered the Salon #62 – STREETS

There were entries which conveyed a really broad range of takes on the subject. Everything from a bustling city street to deserted country lanes and roads winding off into the distance. There was even a Naked Cowboy! Well done everyone!

Choosing wasn’t easy but here are the winners in reverse order:

3rd Place – Stephen with Main Street in Heptonstall. This picture of the “White Lion” brings together a great mood of the sky, the narrow cobblestone lane and the pub in a classic picturesque scene.

2rd Place – Peder with Hazel Island South Denmark. Here, my eye is drawn to the lines. The road, telephone poles and trees all leading to the horizon, while the of hue of the road provides a beautiful accent of golden color.

1st Place – Neil with Ironmonger Street, Stamford, Lincolnshire. Here the people on the street combined with the “model effect” blur provides a really stunning capture that turns surreal as you realize it’s not a model but a real street scene. Everything in the street leads to the furthest person walking away down the exact center of the lane, which for me is the icing of the cake. I’m not generally a big fan of these effects but here it works brilliantly.

Congratulations to all the winners! And Neil…now it’s your turn.

Thanks everyone so much for participating. It was an honor and fun as well to be chosen and to be able to do this from “this side of the pond”. It was great seeing everyone’s ideas.

The FedEx man showed up the other day with the CF Card I won here. It’s so fast in my 50D!

Keep shooting!

Regards,
Philip

Well done Phillip and many thanks for running this Salon. It was a good theme and it must have been hard to come up with a winner. However it was a good choice and congrats must go to Neil for being the overall winner. An 8GB card for you Neil, you lucky blighter *LOL

Wow!

That was nice to wake up to this morning, :)

Thanks to you Phillip for running the salon and I am honoured you chose my effort, especially against some great photographs from others. (Congratulations especially, to Stephen and Pedar for your great entries) :o.

Well, I should be concentrating hard in a few meetings at work today, but I think at least part of my mind will instead be trying to figure out a theme for the next Salon!
