It was recently my Son's birthday. Just before my wife brough the cake in I placed black card on the floor and behind him.
What do you reckon? Expectation?

What a great idea and a lovely shot for the family album. Maybe a nanosecond later would have caught the candle flames bending over as your son blew them out.
p.s. is that cake tilting a bit

Most definately!
A super shot Josh, I love it.
The cake is definately tilting a little to the left, and I think a little more space below would have improved it slightly.
Lovely idea and outcome though! :D

I like this one Josh, its a nice idea and pretty well executed. Maybe I would have cropped more off the right and even added some negative space to the left to add some balance, but its fairly subjective. The danger when taking this sort of shot is IMHO to put the face/eyes in the middle of the viewfinder, and forget whats either side. *party

Hi Josh,
Just spotted your post, I love the image, expression and pose, it is well thought out and exposed, Yes I prefer the second edition, but a great idea and image anyway.
Like this capture of innnocence - like its essence - the second one improved it technically sure.

Nice capture indeed. Innocence and relaxation is visible as it should be.
The revised version looks better to me too. If the bottom part has been cropped, try to leave some more space because the kid's elbows are cut. If the original shot is like that, then I guess there is not much that can be done for that. But anyway it is a very nice photo.
