Fortnightly Salon Competition No.54 "Technology"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many thanks to Neil for running with the last competition and again allowing me the chance to be "head boy" lol

I've chosen "Technology" for the competition. I'm a military engineer and technology has been changing for hundreds of years so there is plenty of opportunity out there. Old or new doesn't matter.

Have a great time looking for ideas and looking fwd to seeing your photographs.

Dave R

Closing date for this Salon is 8.00pm on Wednesday 10th December.

Here are the rules. Please take a moment to read them prior to shooting or uploading your submissions.

1) All photographs are to be uploaded to the photo gallery at http://dpnow.com/galleries/, they can be put in members own gallery if they wish. The resulting link generated for the photo will then be pasted into the next available space in the Salon thread. Please keep photos to max 800 pixel wide so people can see the whole image without scrolling.

2) One entry per user ID only please, which must be the personal work of the entrant.

3) Entries should be "in line" within the thread (not as links to an image held somewhere else).

4) Comments only on entries are welcome within the salon thread itself.

5) After the close the curator will indicate a winner and a couple of runners up.

6) The curator's decision is final.

7) Winners should be offered first refusal to choose the next theme and curate the next salon.

8.) If the winner is unable to curate the next salon the current curator may offer that "honour" to any willing volunteer, possibly the entrant in second or third place.

9) These rules are to be copied and pasted with a new theme by the new Curator at the top of the new Salon thread with a finish date and time.

10) As with all photos posted on DPNow, copyright remains with the photographer and DPNow will not use them without permission.

Hi,
Been a while since I posted, so thought I better drop by :)

Well, I saw 'Technology' and have a pretty good idea of what I wanted to post right away, but I'm struggling to find the image I really want to post. So, I have opted for the 'core' of modern technology.
This isnt really an interpretation, more a representation, of a single component which over the last 30 or so years helped us come leaps and bounds with our advancement of technology. It has also influenced every aspect of the world as we know, whilst aiding the exploration and explanation of events, years and worlds before and far beyond our lives - those being our planet, its history and seemly infinite space that surrounds us in the universe.

Here is my entry taken today. It is a Harley Davidson engine on a bike that has been customised.

The basic V-Twin engine has hardly changed since the late thirties and they have become popular engines (and bikes) for customisation which led to the beginnings of the 'Chopper'.

What you can see below are two 'bullet' shapes, the long one just bottom of centre, is the right-hand footrest and the short one just above centre is the rear brake. In the background is the engine itself. The wavey silver bit is the exhaust, you can also see the downpipe just coming into the picture on the right.

My take on a technology that kept the world moving for hundreds of years - wrought iron! Made by a man wearing a leather apron, using a fire, an anvil, and hammers. These men made components for ships, trains, wagons, and farm tools. There would have been no empire without those skills.
These fairleads on an old sailing ship were made about two hundred years ago, served well, and now rusting has revealed the individual layers of the iron, and the work he put into them.

Steel never looks so interesting!

Beautiful shot - although the iron would have been produced in a coke fired blast furnace rather than by a Blacksmith and an anvil. The change to coal fired furnaces really set the Industrial Revolution going.
Nice image of the Blacksmith though.

Old technology coming back.

Trams at Criche. I remember these when I was a little girl living in Sheffield. My mother took me to town on them.

Hi all

Salon now closed.

Many, many thanks for taking part in the forum and may I wish you all a very merry Christmas and happy new year.

It was very interesting to see different interpretations of “technology” and a cracking effort throughout from the gang – well done to all for making my life very interesting this last two weeks. The expectation of seeing another entry for me to judge has been exciting – checking when I could to see if there had been another entry.

Here are my results:

In joint second place:

Horacio – the man and the bicycle. A picture of something I see nearly everyday and never stopped to look at. A simple idea and the making of a story for me.

Veggiesosage – transport technology – such wonderful colour throughout the photograph.

And the winner is –

Ian – yay. Yes I know technology has many different levels but for myself being a military spanner monkey this hits the spot. Well done Ian.

Hey! Wow! :D

I'm honoured... (and rather surprised!). And thanks so much for organising and curating Salon 54 - mib2!

I know I'm 'management', but does anyone have any objections to me curating the next salon? I won't be claiming Kingston card *LOL
