View Full Version : Photo gallery categories now enabled
Some basic image categories for your gallery photos have now been implemented on the Photo Gallery.
You can include your photos in the appropriate categoreis at upload time or later, by using the 'copy' opton under Edit Photos.
Like adding key words to your photos, I encourage you to use the category system so that people viewing the gallery will have a better chance of finding the kind of image they are interested in. This, in turn, will help people find your photos more easily.
Update: Whole albums can be associated with categories too. Just go to My Albums, follow the Edit link and then use the Assign as a Sub-Category option, choosing the most appropriate category. You will then see your album listed in the category off the gallery front page.
If you wish to suggest additional main and sub-categories, please don't hesitate to get in touch :)

I've just tried out the new gallery categories and got in to a bit of trouble. I seem to have two copies of the images I moved there. Now I can't delete them. also they are now doubled up in my main gallery. Help, what have I done.

Hi Ron - it looks like a database gitch. I tried to fix it, but ended up losing all the copies - very sorry about that.
Do you mind re-uploading? You can assign the image to up to three categories in the second stage of the upload procedure.

Have uploaded and that bit went OK. I have now copied a panorama to landscapes and the image is there ok but the listing shows '0' photos. Strange or what?

Yes - very strange, I did another database scan and there were no problems found, so this wouls appear to be a 'bug' - I'll investigate with PhotoPost and let you know. Thanks for letting me know!

Hi Ron, there is no need to copy your image. Simply go to your album and the Edit option, you can then assign your photo to up to 3 other categories. Your original image is not moved or duplicaed. It is like a tag, something that many photo sites now use, Flickr especially.
NB. I should add that this method assigns the whole album to a category, and is not selective. Also it needs to be done again if you want to use another category.

Thanks Stephen I will try that. Could we please have the EXIF data turned on in the categories view.

I've been copying a few to various section and there's nowhere quite suitable for the image of a 'cricket in an oxalis' ... so I think it would be it useful to include an "Insects" sub category in the "Nature" section.
Thanks

So far as I can tell it already is. Certainly the ones I have assigned to Landscapes show the Exif data.

EXIF information has always been visble in the categories, see:
http://dpnow.com/galleries/showphoto.php/photo/653/cat/565
..for an example.
Are you sure your images actually have EXIF information in the first place. In Photoshop, for example, EXIF headers are stripped if you save the image out using the 'Save for Web' option. To preserve the EXIF information, just use Save As and the JPEG option.

My images in my gallery show the EXIF data. Some of the same images under Birds do not. All images uploaded at the same time.
Just had another look and same happens in the nature heading.

Hello again Ron - very sorry for the teething problems you have been experiencing! Indeed, your duck picture was showing exif dats in your personal gallery but not in the bird category. There is an admin option to rescan images and extract exif data and this has done the trick, but why it didn't work properly originally is a mystery - sorry!

Good suggestion Pol and now done (http://dpnow.com/galleries/showgallery.php/cat/580).
I've also added the important main category for Macro photography (http://dpnow.com/galleries/showgallery.php/cat/581).

Oddly enough this seems to have corrected itself. But I have still logged a query about this with the PhotoPost people.

Ian, Dogs deserve a category! Or maybe Pets, if you want to be politically correct and inclusive!

Good suggestion, Ray! I have added a 'Pets (http://dpnow.com/galleries/showgallery.php/cat/642)' subcategory to the 'Nature (http://dpnow.com/galleries/showgallery.php/cat/568)' category.
Ian
Thank you Ian! I'll be using it!
