View Full Version : Fortnightly Salon Competition #37 - ON WATER
DennisP

Having looked back over all the past Salon Themes I see that nothing like what I am proposing has been done before so the new theme is :-
ON WATER !!
It is wide open to personal interpretation Boats, Water fowl, water skiers etc, or any other twist that you can think of so long as the two words of the Theme come in somewhere. So come on let's see what you all can dream up. !!!! Closing Date :- 12.00 Sunday 30th March
The Rules:
1) All photographs are to be uploaded to the photo gallery at http://dpnow.com/galleries/
The resulting link generated for the photo will then be pasted into the next available space in the Salon thread. Please keep photos to a Max 800 pixels wide so people can see the whole image without scrolling
2) One entry per user ID only please, which must be the personal work of the entrant.
3) Entries should be "In line" within the thread (not as links to an image held somewhere else, any external links or photos held anywhere other than the Galleries will be deleted.)
4) Comments only on entries are welcome within the salon thread itself.
5) After the close the curator will indicate a winner and a couple of runners up.
6) The curator's decision is final.
7) Winners should be offered first refusal to choose the next theme and curate the next salon.
8. If the winner is unable to curate the next salon the current curator may offer that "honour" to any willing volunteer, possibly the entrant in second or third place.
9) These rules are to be copied and pasted with a new theme by the new Curator at the top of the new Salon thread with a finish date and time.
10) As with all photos posted on DPNow, copyright remains with the photographer and DPNow will not use them without permission.

This was taken during Regatta and Carnival week last year. The main fireworks were set off from the jetty in the middle of the bay (on the right-hand side of the photo), but there were also a few that were set off on the water itself (left side), and in my opinion these were the most dramatic and prettiest.

I had a hard time deciding which photo to put in this Salon Dennis. I have a few that I could easily have put in. This one though is one of my favourite taken from on the ship during our Alaskan Cruise last May. Somehow the bow of the ship adds some scale to the scene as we approached the John Hopkins Glacier. I looked on Google earth and you can see the exact location we were. Ice covered the water where we sailed

Ok, here's mine. This one is titled:
"USE AT YOUR OWN RISK"
How can you think this woman is having anything other than a wonderful day soaking up the sun on the languid waves in Provincetown Harbor - Summer 2007
Processing for this image was done using a "Cross Process" action for the color I thought worked for this particular image.
Thanks for great subject!

Some nice shots so far, I was afraid after I had posted the title that there might not be many entries. Keep them coming folks so as to keep me busy after the closing date. Although I do wish one or two people would take the trouble to straighten the horizons before posting, it only take a few seconds. !!
Dennis, if I knew how to I would!!!
Just turn your monitor to one side a bit :D
Hi Dennis, good choice on subject, I wish Ide have had a sudden thrust of enthusiasm on my subject, your doing well with entries with well over a week to go, nice one, Ill see if I can go out and capture something fresh off the shutter.*LOL
cheers

My picture was taken out of a hospital window when my young daughter was taken in a while ago. I was fascinated by the constant changing shapes of light where the sun was shining through the broken cloud, it looked awsome. This picture was taken in colour believe it or not!

Your last chance folks, only 19 hours left to go. Close at 12 noon tomorrow. !!! I can see its going to be difficult to decide as there are so many good images to chose from.
Yes Dennis I agree it wont be easy - I couldn't even decide which one of mine to post.
However I settled on an old favourite - Yachts on Lake Windermere.

Well folks this Salon is now closed. I can see I am going to have a difficult time with judging this lot as there have been many excellent entries. I will try to put up my results by tonight.

Sorry I am later than I intended with the results, but I have found the choices very difficult to make as there were so many good ones to chose from. I felt that I could have done with a second opinion. Perhaps the time has come for us to adopt a different method of choosing the winners, perhaps by some system of voting. What do you think administrators. ?
Anyhow here are my choices for what they are worth :-
1st Place goes to 'Changeling' for his beautifully captured action shot of the surfer. I liked everything in this shot, the position and attitude of the figure on the board - the look of concentration clearly seen in face. I also like the curl in the wave which brings you back round again to the figure. And the 'feel' of water - yes, one could almost feel that. Well done 'Changeling' !!
2nd Place is awarded to 'Ryme-intrinseca' for his beautiful composed shot of the firework display. One can get a great feeling of the atmosphere of that evening. The two parts of the display counterbalance each other nicely and including just a little of the crowd without them being obtrusive here has helped with the atmosphere.
3rd Place I award jointly to 'Pol' and 'Pops' as they have both tried to find something slightly different to create something which fits the theme. I feel that sometimes 'the part is better than the whole'. !! This I often try to do myself which is why these appeal to me.
In conclusion I feel that four others were very worthy of mention - Coupekid for his action shot of the waterscooters.
Mike Parr - for his fishing boat in the late afternoon sunshine (or was it early morning ?) - Pewidane for his swans on setting sunlit lake, although I did think that the light on the swans was somehow not quite right. (Had they been adjusted?) - and finally Rogleale for his delightful picture of the two kids thoroughly enjoying splashing at the waters edge although I feel that picture was a bit washed out.
Thank you everyone who entered even though you may not have got a mention - without a lot of entries there would not be much of a Salon and once again congratulations to the winners.
*clap Congratulations to Changeling - that was a definite winner all along. Well done to runners-up Ryme-intrinseca, Pol and Pops. Thanks for running the Salon Dennis.

Congratulations Changeling. A belter of a picture and a very worthy winner.
Three cheers for Dennis too. I reckon he deserves a medal as big as a frying pan for getting through the uneviable task of having to judge and choose a winner from that selection of superb pictures!
Thanks also for placing my own picci! I truly didn't exect a place! *LOL
Pol
Congratulation Changeling. An absolutely marvellous picture. The surfer looks like a ballet dancer, his hands and fingers are pointing "Just So." He also looks so confident -not as though he is about to fall off any time, which he probably wasn't.
Also congratulations to Ryme-intrinseca, Pol and Pops for your entries.
Thanks also to Dennis for running the salon. You had a hard job, there.
I look forward to the seeing what Changeling has in store for us.:)
Well done indeed. Dennis, that was a tough job you had there choosing a winner, I didn't envy you that!!!
Well done. :)

Thankyou DennisP and everyone for your kind thoughts and support, the photo was one of those moments caught in time that don't come often. I feel very fortunate to be part of this community at DPNow and to have been selected first among all the fine entries.
Because I will be moving next week most of my belongings will be in a Matson container for at least three weeks and I won't be able to judge the next contest, I am forced to pass the enjoyment of theme and judgment to another.
See you all then,

Ryme-intrinseca - Do you as second place winner, feel like having a go as curator for the next Salon.? This is allowed according to the rules if you are interested. Myself, I am going to be too busy over the next two weeks to be able to curate the next.

:D Wow, yes please, I'd love to, if that's within the rules!
I can't believe I was placed second, thank you so much. I've been saying to my husband all week that I haven't got a hope, because the standard of entries was so high. Huge congratulations to Changeling by the way, and to Pol and Pops too.
I'm going to have to think of a subject now! Is it okay if I think about it overnight and post tomorrow? :D

Yes as I said earlier, it is within the rules and I am pleased that you would like to take on the challenge. I am glad you were so pleased with second placing.
I would advise you to look at all subject of past Salons to ensure that you do not accidentally choose a topic that has been done before. Good luck and if you are unsure how start a new Salon there are plenty that can help you on the forum, or you can send me a PM.
PS. I thought I had put up this reply on the thread late last night but somehow it did no seem to get there. !!!
