I have a couple of good photo printers including a Canon i9900 A3+. My question is this: when not printing for a couple of weeks should I turn the printer off?

My worry is that if I turn it off, the printer will not be able to keep the head filled with wet ink and I may get clogged nozzles.

Does anybody have any experience with this?

BTW, I live in New Mexico and the air is VERY DRY here.

Thanks,
Raul

I leave my printer switched on all the time. Not sure if anyone has ever done any definitive tests on this though

There are many that advise leaving the print on all the time, others suggest if its not in use just running a nozzle check once a week, in your case may be best to run one twice a week.
New HP printers have in their instructions to leave the printer on and they automatically run a clean now and then to ensure no blockages.

Thanks all for the feedback. It is winter here and the air is extremely dry. I think I will leave it on for now.

I recently read to leave your printer on a time switch when on holiday, coming on once a day for a short time. As the printer does a head clean as soon as it is switched on, it helps to keep the nozzles clear even when not printing.

Mine is normally off but I switch it on once a week.

I have read that one too and know of people that do it.

My problem with this instruction is that we're constantly being bombarded with campaigns to turn everything off and leave nothing on standby. How can a manufacturer (of anything, not just printers) produce a product for today's environmentally-aware society that you HAVE to leave turned on?

This is the 21st century, yet we have to leave brand new products turned on - using electricity and spending ink when it feels like it.

Sometimes it feels that technological advancement is just something that other people do.

It's best to switch the printer off. As long as you switch ther printer off using the printer's own power switch the printer parks its head properly, so it will be protected from drying out.

I use two Canons, an i850 4 years old, and an i9950 3 years old. I have always used the installed facility to automatically turn off the printer after a user set delay. Never had any problems with ink clogging yet.
I think that Ian is right that it is best to let the printer park the print head until it is required, and Canon do provide the facility!
