View Full Version : Winzip Free Download
My new Vista computer showed the blue screen twice in 24 hours. I followed the link to diagnose the problem only to be told that it was my Laser mouse conflicting with Vista and that I needed to download new drivers.
As I couldn't open the file, I had to download Winzip to upzip it. (Winrar wouldn't work.)
Previously Winzip has been free, but this time although it said Free Download, it was linked to other sites which I was supposed to visit ie. Limewire for one. I can't remember the others.
Does anyone know if Winzip if Free anywhere, as I keep getting a "Nag" confirming that Winzip is Free providing I visit these sites?

I can't confirm the situation for Vista, but XP certainly has a compression program built in though it may not be actually called Winzip. There should be a command in the context menu which says something like Send to Zip file iirc. Its pretty much the same on the Mac, any Zipped file will uncompress using the built in compression program. As for Winrar, I hate it, and it certainly is not free except on a trial basis.
Thanks Stephen. Nothing is easy is it? I don't even know what an NTFS file is, yet the assumption is that I should know how to use it. Here is a link telling me about zipped files in Vista.

Re Winrar, I have had it for about 2 years and never paid for it yet. I must admit that I get a nag saying my evaluation date is past but I am still able to use it successfully.
I don't often use zip files anyway. However, I was unable to unzip my new driver without Winzip.
Finally, there are a lot of people buying computers for the first time and I think that this zipping business must be very difficult for them to comprehend. Anyway, it is for me.
I suppose I could always buy Winzip!:(
Winzip certainly seemed to be a kinder program before Corel took it over.
Then again, the same could be said for Paint Shop Pro...
Strictly speaking Winzip was never "free". I even paid for it once, when they said the upgrades would be free. Then Corel "acquired" Winzip and said "you've got to pay for upgrades now". For the last several months I've been using "WinRAR for U3" on my U3 key.
I have my old Winzip 8 and Winzip 9 stored away which I install when I wipe my PC, but I'm always wary that it's out of date and may have security issues now that Corel want me to pay for it every time they bugfix it.
Hi Autumn
You could try a package called FreeZIP (which, funnily enough, is free).
You can find it here: http://www.sofotex.com/FreeZip-download_L594.html
or here: http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,6383,00.asp
I have never tried it with Vista but it works with all other versions of windoze. Once installed, you just right-click on the ZIP file and choose the appropriate action.

Hi Audrey,
I have about 24 zipped downloads on my Vista machine, and I have no problems opening them using a 'right click' > 'Extract all'. No need for Winzip or Winrar.
Doesn't that work for you? Maybe I'm just lucky!
Roger
On any file or folder in a file viewer window, right click the object and look for 'Send to' in the resulting menu. One of the options there is to create a compressed file; this is a zip file. Vista (and XP before it) can also read conventionally encoded zip files without the need for a third party accessory. WinZip and others come into their own when you want to use unusual settings for the data compression. They can also decode a wide range of unusual file compression types and settings, but for everyday use, the Vista support is perfectly adequate.

Try this link: Click Here (http://www.download.com/WinZip/3000-2250_4-10003164.html?part=dl-winzip&subj=dl&tag=button&cdlpid=10704232)
When you install select 'No Thanks' to the two promotional offers that are displayed.
Thats the link to the evaluation version of winzip, they host it off site on websites like cnet's download.com, this is a legitimate site. Stay away from LimeWire as you'll usually end up with something nasty in your system.
I've not found winrar to have any probs opening .zip before though.
Also, try running windows update, under 'Start Menu'>'All Programs'> OR 'Start Menu'>'Control Panel'>'System & Maintenance'>'Windows Update' and then on the left click 'Check For Updates' as vista is pretty damn good at getting the right drivers for most things once it sees that its got a problem.

Theres only two drivers I have had to manually source and install, one for audio and the other a graphics driver as I play alot of games on my computer. So far vista finds my camera, my wireless mouse, keyboard, bluetooth dongle, graphics tablet and anything else its had plugged into the USB ports so you hopfully wont have too much trouble getting your mouse to work.
Good luck!
Also, let us know what mouse you have (model should be on the bottom) as will be helpful for anyone else with one whos looking to upgrade.
Cheers,
I tried to emulate my problem by clicking on the downloaded drivers, but of course because I now have Winzip they opened.
I am wondering if my computer was going through a funny patch, because when I clicked a link in e mail I got a message saying that windows couldn't find the link; I haven't done anything to it, but now it finds the link.
My mouse is a Tevion 6425 wireless laser mouse which seems to be working ok now.
I have just found something out that I had never thought to check before. I was on the phone to someone who wanted me to print her a label for an Amazon return (she does not have a computer!) Whilst trying to type in the informaton, my mouse refused to work - yet again. I suddenly realised I had put the telephone received on the desk next to the keyboard and mouse annentae. As soon as I moved the receiver to the other side of the desk, it worked!!!!
I must remember that, it could have been the cause of previous mouse problems.:\

I have over the years tried a number of wireless mice and keyboards and concluded them to be a waste of time.
They play silly devils when the batteries are weak, I had a mouse that supposedly recharged when placed in a dock, that too I found troublesome.
I reckon you can't beat a decent optical mouse on a wire. Never had trouble with one of those.
For the laptop I have a small mouse with a retractable wire that is great.

The Apple Mighty Mouse for the Mac uses Bluetooth, it has never been a moments trouble and since I got the machine have only changed the batteries once. Personally I have always hated the wired mouse.

Being PC I have not used a Mac so can't comment.
I knows what you mean about wired mouse, but after the various experiences with wireless I will settle for the reliability, for now at least;)

I had a wireless one once. It was okayish, but if you work more than 6 hours in a day (with a break in the middle to top-up the charge over lunchtime) the batteries were useless. It stood no chance with my 10 hour days.
Nowadays, I use a wired one plugged into the USB port of my keyboard. Works a treat and still gets rid of one of the cables from across the desk. More than that, it's a convertible mouse. Press the release catch and a baby/tiny mouse pops out which I then take and use with my laptop. Really quite clever.

I am with you Patrick!
I hate wireless mice and keyboards. Because of the job we do at work, we can basically order what ever we want, course, most of the guys go for the latest and greatest wireless jobs. It amuses me watching them struggle trying to find batteries and so on. I much prefered a mouse on a lead.
At home, I have a trackball.......wired of course! Excellent space saving device.

I can highly recommend 7-zip as a compressor. It's open source ie. free not shareware with annoying caveats, and apparently supports Vista for those on the bleeding edge. It reads and writes to a number of formats including .zip. It actually compresses better and quicker than Winzip.
..and the only mouse with a tail in our house is Angelina, my daughter's pet :D I hate using the touchpad and find the cordless much easier to use with a laptop; the batteries last long enough and give enough warning about dying that changing them isn't an issue. Interesting comment about the phone, Autumn, I hadn't noticed that ever being an issue.

Hi Autumn Just seen this post, a word of warning, Radio type phones, including walk around cordless and Mobile phones can corrupt data and hard drives if used close to a computer, so be very careful.

Thanks Tinka. We now have a new suite? of phones and I have plugged it in on the other side of the room.
2400MHz cordless frequency mice are more immune to interference like this. I also have a Bluetooth mouse for my laptop and this is pretty immune to interference (Bluetooth uses the samne frequency).
By the way, I personally think thaht 'laser' mice are well worth the extra. And Logitech are usually better than Microsoft.
