View Full Version : Fortnightly Salon Competition No 33 - Exit
Life in a Lens
04-01-08, 03:07 PM
Hello everyone! I've thought and thought and I've decided, since were have just left another year behind us, that the theme for this salon will be
EXIT
We exit many things, situations, and many places in many ways through out our lives. Open to creative interpretation!
I won't go to much into it since I'm anxious to see how all of you decide to interpret this. :)
Contest will run till January 18th.
The Rules:
1) All photographs are to be uploaded to the photo gallery at http://dpnow.com/galleries/
The resulting link generated for the photo will then be pasted into the next available space in the Salon thread.
2) One entry per user ID only please, which must be the personal work of the entrant.
3) Entries should be "In line" within the thread (not as links to an image held somewhere else, any external links or photos held anywhere other than the Galleries will be deleted.)
4) Comments only on entries are welcome within the salon thread itself.
5) After the close the curator will indicate a winner and a couple of runners up.
6) The curator's decision is final.
7) Winners should be offered first refusal to choose the next theme and curate the next salon.
8. If the winner is unable to curate the next salon the current curator may offer that "honour" to any willing volunteer, possibly the entrant in second or third place.
9) These rules are to be copied and pasted with a new theme by the new Curator at the top of the new Salon thread with a finish date and time.
10) As with all photos posted on DPNow, copyright remains with the photographer and DPNow will not use them without permission.
This seems like a tough topic! Here's my take:

Hummm, tough topic indeed but your pic perfectly satisfies the tough standard. Clear cut and no need of explanation. - EXIT FROM THE GREAT BUDDAH:D
Amazing that you can pick up a right pic out of many many old photo stocks - you surely take far more shots every year than I do, i imagine.

We took our 3 year old grandson to a theme park for Under 10's. After I had taken him to the toilet prior to our departure home, I suggested he stayed with Grandpa whilst I 'Powered my nose.' He flatly refused and sat down on the spot - hence the photograph.

Hopefully this one has something to do with 'Exit'. Exit of sulfur gas and steam from the deep underground. Taken at backyard of a spa/hot springs a few years ago.
I'm afraid I can not recall how I can "copy and paste" the uploaded pic from the gallery, though am trying it since yesterday.:o Kindly allow me to post as a thumbnail, if a few more trials do not go well.:o

Success this time too, eh. :D
Here's a reminder for another time. The easiest method is to use the "My Pics" facility beheath the emoticons. Click on 'My Pics' then select 'original image' and 'inline' from the drop-down menu along the top.
Hope that helps. :)

Thanks for that Pol. You would not believe the performance I go through to get my images on the screen - making new tabs - reloading DPNow, losing them and starting again!:o
I've just done a test with your way, but instead of "In Line" I used "Centered" (because I like mine centred:)) and that worked a charm. *clap
Thanks Pol, I hope I do not forget next time.;)

a question from a non-native speaker of English language:
So your 3-year-old grandson refuses to be changed inside with other kids who might behave better in his opinion? ;) :D - a clever boy!:)

Exit from ........
Out of the darkness into the light.

Hi Yoshi
No, he had been a Clever Boy! and we were "Exiting" but I wanted to return without him, leaving him with his Grandpa, but he did not want to be parted from me, so he just sat down refusing to move.
Happy New Year to all.
Here's my go
Cheers

I've been thinking about this for days, and I really can't decide what to do... I'd like to upload a photo that I think fits this theme perfectly, but it's not the usual kind of light-hearted image that most of the competition entries are.
It's a graphic picture of a baby that has literally just 'exited' from it's mother, and although in my opinion it fits the theme perfectly, I'm not sure whether it would offend people or not - part of the mother can be seen in the background. I've looked at the forum guidelines and there's nothing there against it, but I was wondering what people thought? The last thing I want to do is cause offence!

I think it is very good of you to ask first.
Personally, I am not offended by that sort of thing, however, I dont feel it is suitable for this forum.
What I would suggest, is maybe convert to black and white, and blur out the 'sensitive' areas?
Ian should obviously have the last say on this.
Your right though, it sounds like a perfect match for the theme.
The final curtain?

Phew, I'm glad I asked first, before I uploaded it!
Thanks for the suggestions - the blurring isn't a problem, although it's not really needed as the midwife's arm is fortuitously placed! - but I don't think it works in black and white. Part of the impact for me is the 'starkness' of it and the colour of the baby's skin. The birth process may produce beautiful babies, but the process itself isn't so lovely!
I think on this occasion I won't enter, I'll just enjoy looking at other people's images. :)
Here's my offering:

Well done everyone! These have been some very interesting concepts in exit and lovely photos!
So without further delay....
In 3rd place: Pol! With a beautiful close up on leaves reaching for light from the cracks of darkness.
In 2nd place: Ian! I just can't help thinking, "Thank you, please come again." every time I look at it. Good eye on that one.
And in 1st place....
devilgas ! ! !
Dave, that is such a striking shot, and a good exit! The dark enclosure and exit towards the light. Give me a feeling of needing to reach for that blue. Well done!
Good job everyone!
Well done Devilgas, I just knew that would win.
I was going to add a comment about it winning in my post after yours but I didn't, I knew it would win!!!
Great picture. :)

whoaaaa. thanks all! amazed to see that i was chosen as the winner, especially as it was a hastily chosen entry having returned from egypt a few hours before the comp closed.
only just checked in so apologies for being a bit slow to the thread. will try and get the next salon theme sorted tomorrow evening....it'll be something where creativity will win the day though...probably :)
thanks to life in a lens for running the comp *clap

hi ben,
the only stuff in my gallery is photos that have been included on threads on dpnow. the rest of the stuff is all on my website where i have considerably more control over the content.
the cave itself was just a short cavern tagged onto the end of a dive, although i still managed to spend 1/4 of the dive in there. weird how i'm more at home under rocks than in open water. same in egypt this year.
the photo is pretty much as shot. specifically underexposed by 1 or 2 stops to accentuate the outside blue and was shot on the camera i bought from winning one of the greek gods comp rounds!
