View Full Version : Fortnightly Salon Competition No. 31 - Movement

A big thanks to Jennifer for choosing my cheeky little fella for winning the last competition.

This time I would like to challenge everyone to capture 'Movement'

This can be interpreted however you wish, as long as you capture some sort of motion, movement, speed or whatever.

So dust off the tripods, extend the shutter times, practice the panning, and get snapping.

You have until the Midday 15th December to complete your submissions.

I would like to see as many entrants as possible, as the winner will have the priviledge running the Christmas Salon Competition! ;)

Here are the rules:

1) All photographs are to be uploaded to the photo gallery at http://dpnow.com/galleries/
The resulting link generated for the photo will then be pasted into the next available space in the Salon thread.

2) One entry per user ID only please, which must be the personal work of the entrant.

3) Entries should be "In line" within the thread (not as links to an image held somewhere else, any external links or photos held anywhere other than the Galleries will be deleted.)

4) Comments only on entries are welcome within the salon thread itself.

5) After the close the curator will indicate a winner and a couple of runners up.

6) The curator's decision is final.

7) Winners should be offered first refusal to choose the next theme and curate the next salon.

8. If the winner is unable to curate the next salon the current curator may offer that "honour" to any willing volunteer, possibly the entrant in second or third place.

9) These rules are to be copied and pasted with a new theme by the new Curator at the top of the new Salon thread with a finish date and time.

10) As with all photos posted on DPNow, copyright remains with the photographer and DPNow will not use them without permission.

One from the archive for me too Ben, shown this before but I think it admirably shows the theme of movement. Taken at a Rodeo we visited near Bryce Canyon Utah

Here's my first attempt in the DPnow Salon:

http://dpnow.com/galleries//data//578/MOVEMENT.jpg

It's an inverted water reflection taken at a very slow shutter speed to allow floating leaves swirling in the current to make movement trails, which I hope creates an illusion of swirling wind in this image.

Hate to say it Ian but the Fortnightly Competition has degenerated into a troll through the archives - so what IS the point! ! ! !

Not necessarily Roger, though in some respects in it such a bad thing that a Salon Comp gives one a chance to display an older photograph?

I think all too often we take a photo, archive it, then never see it again, and if a Salon Competition like this gives us the chance to go through our old pictures, and find a suitable image, then so be it.

Please also remember Roger, that this competition is run by the previous winner, and as such i is down to the winner to stipulate the rules. ANYONE who wins can stipulate that the picture submitted is a new one. I chose not too for the reasons above, so I would suggest to you, that you show off one of your pictures old or new, try and win, then the next one you can make a rule about not using old photos! :D

I'm inclined to agree Ben. I went through a spell of trying to take an image specifically for the Salon. However this is not always possible and in fact I have not entered at all for the last few salons, as I didn't even have anything in the archive that was suitable. Numbers of entries have been falling recently though and I feel its better to enter an image from the archive than not at all, hence my picture entered in this one.

So come on Roger, don't be so negative, either take a picture to fit the theme or dig one out of the archive. Either way its better than not entering at all wouldn't you say :)

Roger

I do accept your point, but the Salon isn't really a deadly serious photography competition. It's just for fun. However, if I was the curator, I'd give more credit to an entry that had been created specially for the Salon.

Anyway - the Salon wasn't created by me; it was suggested and implemented by the users of the forum :) If the rules need changing, the users will need to decide!

So would I Ben, I think we would be pleasantly surprised. I think John is low on digital images, though I'll bet he has many great shots on film which need scanning :)

Just as a matter of interest these chaps are endangered and a rare find even on the ground.

Is a triptych allowed? if not, let me know and I'll replace it with a single image. :)

This is my first real attempt at taking 'fireworks' pics. I wasn't sure what shutter speed to use to capture them exploding. Unfortunately, anything slower than this made the smoke stand out even more, and obscured the fireworks - shame there wasn't a bit more breeze.

Spooky - that was the night the photos were taken! I took some on the Wednesday night too, but we didn't have a very good view. When I was a kid, I remember that the very last firework used to say 'Goodnight Swanage' in pink! Wish they still did that.

This one was taken earlier this year at Kirkistown Race Track on the Ards Penninsula. My mate races an MK Indy called 'Lucy' and I have got to know a few on the circut. This is Richard Morgan in his Caterham 7. He usually wipes the floor with anyone! :)

I was reading an article in a photomag at the time and this is the crop and rotation it suggested to give the shot more impact. Not sure if it works or not.

You can see more of these on my website if you are interested at http://richardcrowe.co.uk/55p/

The coveted first place, and the person who will be running the Salon over Christmas will be:

John Periment!
His leaves is truly inspirational, I just love the sense of swirling movement captured by the extended shutter time

In Second:
Jojo, with the glass, a super idea, and one I may try out myself! :D

In third:
Ian with his 'Y' fronted cyclist, makes me laugh every time I see that brave fellow!

Again I would like to aqpologise for the delay in announcing the winners here.

No problem at all John, the subject I chose was to get people to think about movement, to extend the shutter time, and to do something a little bit extra as it were. I felt there were some excellent shots submitted, but your imaginative shot of swirling leaves, to me anyway, was a clear winner I loved it from the off.

I look forward to seeing the next subject, and hope it will be something I can get my teeth into over |Christmas (even if I am working! bah!)
