Epson printers have a bad rep for wasting ink.
I can tell you now that, with the Picturemate, you get wasted ink. Yep, that single cartridge has 6 colours in it and you're going to waste a lot of it. I've just finished my second cartridge and, using the SSC utility, discovered that it's got about 34% of ink left in it that I'm going to have to throw away. It's a wasted cost, and we should sue someone...
Cue violins with "hard done by" music...
Well, except that...

First, as no one is all that interested in the Picturemate these days, a history lesson -
In the beginning there was the Picturemate and it brought forth bountiful photos. Yay, and without using a computer. And it was good.
Atop a high mountain, the first user was told by the almighty Epson that he could print 100 photos for a mere sacrifice of £29 including VAT. The user smiled, "that's 29p per photo" he said.
The first user returned with this information, etched on a stone tablet, which he proceded to distribute to his flock singing "we don't need dye-sub anymore".
Some of the flock were unhappy at this revelation. They sold dye-sub printers and were afraid that such enlightenment could be sacriledge. Yay, and threaten their bottom-line. These people callously, and with beastliness of forethought, began rumors about the blessed Picturemate. They claimed that it may not produce the stated 100 prints and would cost more.
Other members of the flock had other complaints. "Almighty Epson", they prayed, "Surely you are wrong. Surely you've noticed that I've printed 135 photos from my ink cartridge." Yay, and other members of the flock agreed.
Their Lord relented and, with a miraculous wave of his staff, Epson stuffed an extra 35 sheets of paper in the box for no extra cost. And the flock were happy again.
As time moved on, occasional members of the flock determined that this figure of "135" was magical and could rarely be achieved. Some were printing a lot more than this figure - some were printing 150 or more. Yay, the Picturemate must be blessed indeed, they said.

Or, to cut a long story short, I've just logged my 157th print from my Picturemate Picturepack ink cartridge. At a cost of £17.99 from 7dayshop, with extra paper costing 7p per sheet (Epson Premium Glossy Photo Paper 6"x4" BOGOF - 100sheets for £6.99 also from 7dayshop), that brings the cost of each photo to 12.5p.
That's a bit cheaper than the 29p originally stated for the Picturemate. I wonder if the new Picturemates will be so generous?
The purpose of this post, if it has one, is that regardless of the fact that over 30% of the ink was wasted, the ink cartridge still printed many more photos than it was advertised to print. In this situation, is it really a "waste" when you've printed more than you paid for?
Some interesting stats -
Photo #119 - Status Monitor graphic turns yellow at 20% (the most used ink is Magenta which is at 20%).
Photo #122 - First warning, during printing, that the ink is under 20% (M is 19%)
Photo #140 - Second warning, the ink is now under 10% (M is 9%, C is 18%)
Photo #147 - Status monitor has yellow exclamation mark, states "Ink Low"
Photo #149 - Third warning, the ink is now under 5% (M is 4%, C is 14%)
Photo #157 - Status monitor states "Ink Out. There may not be enough ink remaining to print another page like the last page."
At this stage, ink levels are:
28% (K), 11% (C), 0% (M), 28% (Y), 54% (R), 50% (B)
There's no doubt that the PM would have printed a lot more before it ran out if I had something to print that didn't need C or M. My prints were, over the course of several weeks, mostly just normal photos (holiday snaps, photos of dog in garden, photos of people, that kind of thing) - I didn't do anything special to make the ink last longer. Some people recommend printing in batches but I didn't bother with any of that, I just printed when I wanted.
It'll be interesting to see what the new Picturemates are capable of achieving.
