I have produced a couple of video clips because FTU folk wanted to know what the new Oly E-3 sounded like. Here's the one with the E-3, Sony A700 and a Pentax istDL - suffice to say they all sound remarkably different :)

Interesting to hear that the Pentax seems quieter than the others. I must admit shutter noise is something I've never really thought much about myself, but it's something David often remarks on.

He likes to hear them click and it sometines drives me up the wall when he decides to go through his collection of old cameras, handle them, clean them and click the shutters. Not so bad during the daytime but I'm not so patient when he starts clickety-clunking them late in the evening. *LOL

Do all men do that with their 'treasures'? :D

Haha - what treasures?!

The Pentax is of course not comparable with the much more expensive models in the clip, but I thought it would be a good frame of reference. The Pentax is also clearly a slower, two stage, action, but yes it is more quiet.

What I really wanna know and can't seem to find out from 'he who waffles' blinds me with science and clickety-clicks is :-

Does it matter what sort of noise the shutter makes on a digital camera and is the noise mechanical or electronic.

The only reason I can think of, for my own purposes, is that a noisy, shutter is inclined to scare off any wildlife, especially a nearby bird I might happen to be shooting.

The sounds that are made are a) the metal/metal, metal/plastic and plastic/plastic of the mirror mechanism operating at high speed, being sprung down and pulled up, b) the shutter being released, with the leaves opening and running across the frame and then being pulled-back, closed, and c) the motor sound that powers all this.

The collective noise varies widely in duration, tone and volume. It can sound smooth and well muted or it can have a nasty metallic ring.

If it is loud and unpleasant there are various consequences as you say, Pol.

Many non-DSLRs have pretend SLR sounds, which are of course electronically played at the time of exposure, but that's not the case with SLRs.

Thanks for all of that. I could have nightmares just imaging how it might be if you and David were ever locked together into a room for an in-depth techie chat.

So it would be safe to assume it would be fair to say the shutter sound is irrelevant apart from the fact it may, or may not, alert the subject to the fact you've just taken a shot.

Which would further confirm my suspicions that men derive endless pleasure from playing with their little treasures. :D
